I've been wondering, has anybody ever used mixed heads?

I think mixing and matching is just another part of finding your sound. Either it works for you or it doesn't.

Right now I'm using the exact same head top and bottom on my toms. It really maximizes the overall tone and I love the sound I'm getting. I've mixed and matched brands a bit in the past and some combos didn't work well, others seemed fine.

But for bass drum I use either an Evans or Remo front head with an Aquarian batter depending on the sound I need.

My snare has a Remo batter and an Evans snare side.

I'm using Ambassadors over G Pluses at the moment... Sounds great. Think I might try the Ambassador X's top and bottom next though.

Yep, I mix heads some times. I normally use an Evans coated G2 snare batter over Remo hazy ambassador. I just like the sound and feel of the film of the Remo better. Same with toms. Always ambassador clear on the bottom and either Remo emperors, clear or coated, or clear G2s on top. Never had any problem. Both great heads from great companies.
