Default Suggestions? Need heads for 16 x 18 bass drum

Greetings. I am seeking advice on heads for a bass drum 18 inches in diameter and 16 inches deep. To tell you the truth, I prefer the quicker response of 14 inch standard depth bass drums, But this is a Rogers orphan 16 x 18 floor tom that had spurs and wood hoops added and became a bass drum. Rather than have my friendly drum tech buddy saw it off, I am attempting to improve the speed of response situation with the right head choices. I am thinking a front head with about a 4" port in it might be smart, since that will cut out a bit of that slow responding resonance? Also I am wondering if I should try maybe an Evans eq 1 or some single ply batter bass head that has that collar on the inner side. I don't want to dry the drum out totally. Just make it kind of punchy and quicker than it would be if I had nice resonant heads front and read like I do on my 14 inch deep 18 inch bass drum on my other kit. Any ideas, brothers and sisters?
Thanks!

Sure. I use an Emad 1 with a clear Evans falam patch on my 14x18 BD and I get a nice thump and just the right amount of boom. I also tune it a little tighter but not boppy. It keeps it quick. An Ebony Reso will give you a little better projection I think. The coated G1 I'm using as a reso does dry mine up a little but I don't have mine ported.

I tried the Emad 2 (ply) and it's nice and beefy but I like the responsiveness of the single ply a little better. I tried the Emad 2 on my 16x18 maple floor tom and it didn't sound so good in a floor tom context.

I might try an Aquarian Super Kick soon. I've heard good things about them but haven't tried one yet.

The head combination that has worked very well for me on my 18X14 is Coated EQ1 for Resonant and Coated EMAD for Batter. The sound of my bass drum always gets compliments from other drummers. I would Imagine that this combo would still work very well on a 18X16 as well. The style that I play is Jazz/Rock/Latin.

It's already an 18" bass drum... I would've thought it would be quite responsive as it is, especially since it's not a square size anyways.

To each his own, I suppose.

I'll second the coated EMAD with a coated EQ1 resonant head. Great response, great tuning range and great quality of tone.

+1
Used this combo with great effect on our church's 18" Catalina Jazz bass drum.

When it works it works. The Emad 1 makes it easy to tune tight and thumpy for an open and deader room and just as easy to go low and make that little Cat Jazz BD boom when you tune it down.

It makes me wonder what a Clear Emperor and a felt strip would sound like. I might have to try it.
