Default Roland TD-9 K2 or TD-9 KX2

Is the extra money worth it?

I've been looking at the TD-9KX2 myself. It's worth the difference to me. A little better pads, and the VH-11. I've never liked the feel of the FD-7/8 HH controller, and I've had to repair it countless times. I just had to order a new sensor strip from Roland Canada yesterday.

Simply: YES it's worth it if you can afford it. The TD9 is already a great module, but all mesh pads feels worth it to me. I have the TD9KX and love it.
There will be many who say the basic TD-9 is great, and that's true too! But I am very happy with my KX.

I just picked this up for 700 used. I'd rather have the mesh heads but to be honest it doesn't bother me at all. I've played on both, I'm not sure it's worth it. What's the difference in price 200-400? I guess 200 more would be worth it.

I found an used td12 for $2000. Would that be a good option?

Used td12 all the way, IMO the drum brain is the most important thing, and its a good step up from the td9, worth the extra money

That is a NICE find for 700 bucks. The TD-9 module alone is worth that.

The very first thing you will want to do is upgrade your HH to something like a VH-11. You may feel okay not having mesh heads, but there is such a difference between a VH-11 and that CY5/FD8 combo that it's insane.

Personally, I like the rubber pads more. There is NO mainteance with these. You are "supposed" to tighten and will eventually need to replace the mesh. The mesh is "more" realistic to play on and quieter, but i still prefer the rubber.
If you can get the TD-12 though...go with that...much better choice because of the module.
