Default Drum Sticks, Wood Tip Vs Nylon?

I have recently been having the problem with drum sticks chipping on my wooden tipped Vic Firth 5A's. I was wondering, what are the difference, advantages and disadvantages of nylon tips comparing to wooden tips? I play mainly fast, heavy, metal music, what would be the best sticks to cope with speed and what would last?

Thanks, IReverendX.
