Default Homemade shakers?

Hi -

I know that homemade shakers are very common, and I want to make me a few. Does anybody have any specific successes that they'd like to share? Different containers to use - soda can, pill container, etc... fills? rice, sand, whatever. Please share!

If you can still find hollow plastic fruit, that is very good to use. I have made shakers from plastic pineapples, apples, oranges, pears, bananas, limes, etc. Some of the plastic is harder, some softer. I have also used hollow ceramic fruit but those are more fragile. Just drill a small hole, put in the bbs one by one, then plug the hole with epoxy and the tip of a chop stick. These are great to hand out during audience jams and people always give them back.

Unfortunately, all plastic fruit nowadays is all foam core. If you ever find any of the hollow kind, snap it up.

DMC is going to create a new frenzy in the drumming community. Soon you will see Jojo with a pair of kiwis (ha) of the plastic persuasion on an xhat. Plastic fruit stocks are sure to go up. That is a good idea though. I might have to try handing some out at the gig tonight. Hobby Lobby here I come!

Plastic Easter Eggs with BB's or rice.
Max Roach did it, Elvin Jones did it, but Roy Haynes didit and didit and didit.

That sounds like a fun raid on neigborhood thrift shops in the making, LOL

And the collection of various gravel textures from highway roadside, quarries, construction sites.
