Default First time head buyer - Advice?

Hey folks, first post so be nice :)

I'll cut to the chase, I have a basswood Mapex Horizon HX kit that I got for my xmas 2010. I have had one cursory change of heads from stock heads (REMO UX, ugh.) to an OK set of emperor clears on my toms and ambassador coated on my snare. NOTE I only changed the batter heads, as I didn't want to spend too much money prior to seeking advice.

I have had these heads for around 4-5 months now and they're showing signs of needing changed. Now my question to you guys is - What heads should I change them to? I am looking to change both batter and reso heads on everything (5 piece set: 14" snare, 12/13/16" toms and 22" bass) I play mostly rock and a bit of jazz from time to time if that helps?

I'm not fussed for brands, although I like the look of coated heads somehow...

Thanks in advance for any time given to help out :)

Cheers, Chris.

Since your toms are bigger, i would say buy coated emperors for all the batter heads, and clear ambasadors as resos. Thats one of the most popular head setups probably due to John Bonham, who had even larger drums! For your kick, I have heard power stroke 3s are a good skin with a bit of natural dampening, but from personal experience, i would recomend an evans EMAD bass batter skin, which has a built in, yet removable foam ring around the outside. It sounds great, when you tune it up nice, and put in which ever foam ring sounds better(it comes with a small and a larger ring).

A two ply batter over a one ply reso is a tried and tested head choice. A Remo Emperor over Ambassador or an Evans G2 over G1 is a great starting point. Guys have been using this set up long before Bonham hit the scene.

As an alternative to the EMAD, be sure to check out a Remo PS3 too. I use them both sides of the bass drum. A little more open than the EMAD, but still plenty of focus there too.

I would strongly recommend checking out the G Plus heads for your toms as they're a single-ply but 12mil (20% thicker than a G1) and have a bit more fullness of sound and low-end resonance. Evans has a wide variety of options for your snare drum, depending on the sound you're going for. For the kick an EQ4 or GMAD would be my recommendation with the GMAD being a bit more of a rock bass drum sound. The EQ4 is more open and could work fine in a variety of situations.

Cheers and good luck with the new heads!
