Default Stupid question

This is probably a stupid question, but here it goes. I've been playing for only 4 months and I was wondering if I can take the bottom head on my tom and switch it with the top one. Or do I just need to replace it. Take it easy on the replies, PLEASE.

Tom heads are interchangable mate. Unlike a snare where you have a dedicated resonant head, you'll find that both heads on a tom are batter heads (even though it's on the reso side) and can be swapped.

Are both heads single ply? It is more common for the bottom head to be a single ply head (or at least no thicker than the batter head), but there are no rules that state is has to be.

Thanks. That's what I thought, just wanted to make sure. As far as the ply not sure, although when I put it together is didn't say one was for the top or the bottom. So when I'm ready to get some new heads what would be some good tom heads?

The options are endless. A good starting point is a one or two ply batter head over a single ply reso. Remo offer the Ambassador (single ply) and the Emperor (2 ply). Evans have the G1 (1 ply) or G2 (2 ply). Aquarian also make quality heads but I have no experience with their products.

Of course there's a swag of premuffled heads available too.

That's not a stupid question at all. I suppose it would be a little confusing because you can't do that with a snare drum, and if you don't know, you don't know. Ask away. That's why we're all here.

+1 Ive seen loads of people using the Evans EC Reso as a batter. You can have any combination you like. Although, single ply on the reso is usually the best sound. Cheap kits - the heads are all the same... (apart from snare) Have fun!
