Historically called a 'low boy'. Only later did it become the hi-hat by extending the pole to bring the hats up to a comfortable playing height.

It used to be called the "sock cymbal" also because it was down at sock level.

Yup.

Long before the hi-hat was invented, drummers only played their hat cymbals down low, with just the left foot.

Years later, someone (often credited to Papa Jo Jones) had the idea to ad an extender arm to the hats would be high enough to play with sticks too. Thus the term high-hat, which over time became hi-hat.

Cool pic. I had heard about that but never saw one, it reminds me of the way I used to play a cowbell with my foot. I have done the same thing for cowbells as Papa Jo Jones did for the hats, now I can play with my feet as well as my hands. Check my site.
