Default Best Song Ever

Not making fun of any 13 year old girls in this thread.

Well aware there will not be one, but it would be interesting to see what a few peoples idea of the best song ever is.

Please play nice, don't give the whole, I couldn't possibly pick one answer, I'm sure there is something that you think is particularly brilliant.

I think Trane's Alabama is the best thing I ever heard (thanks for that referral, Ken!).

Heartfelt, deep, intelligent, sophisticated, raw, moves from hauntingly beautiful to wild and intense, brilliant playing, great chords, sweet swinging once it gets going, gorgeous sounds, wonderful arrangement. The free time part at the end is amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j_TDoOPnIA

Until I heard that it might have been Joni Mitchell's Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV-lBswnEvE

The most all-round pleasing non-serious song I've heard would have to be Bohemian Rhapsody.

Hard to narrow it down, but here are 5 of my picks...

Love Lies Bleeding/Funeral for a Friend -- Elton John (from perhaps the best ALBUM ever - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road!)

Day in the Life -- The Beatles

Feeling that Way -- Journey (Dunbar and Rolie, I mean, c'mon!)

Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones

Sunshine of Your Love - Cream

So many others but gotta limit the list somewhere, right? :)

Hmmm... this is tough... really tough....

I'll have to go with either So What by Miles Davis or Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles.

Some justifications would make this far more interesting then your average bland list thread.

Here is one of mine, I'll post others but this came to mind first,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj54HJkG1rM

Iter Impius by Pain of Salvation

A very beautiful, oddly tongue in cheek song. I just can't pick a flaw with it, the concept behind the performance is fantastic (it is part of a large concept album) and the song is just so dynamic and heartfelt with some brilliant musicianship. It appeals to me on every level, intellectually and emotionally.

I always thought that this was one of the most perfectly realized renditions by a band of a songwriter's ideas. The performance is punchy and the whole production has a happy, sort of loopy sheen to it, and Keith Moon's drumming is a revelation. A true gem by a great, great band and maybe my favorite recording by the Who.

Turn it up!

I do tend to say what others feel.... ;) I really don't know what it is about those two songs. I never bought the records, they were just on AM radio so much when I was a kid they're packed somewhere in the back of my mind! AAHHHH!

I suppose I should count myself as lucky that at least back then, most artists sounded different from one another, as opposed to now when you turn on Radio Disney and everybody sounds the same....

Coheed have some brilliant tracks, they are criminally under-rated here in Australia, a massive recommendation for commercial hard rock listeners and fans of alternative/modern prog rock. The entire Velourium Camper sequence on In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3 is mind blowing.

This is one of my personal favorites of theirs,

In Keeping Secrets (album) is by far my favorite album by them, and the song is killer too! I remember when I say them last October they opened the show with that song. Sooooo good!

Yeah, the albums Good Apollo: IV, and No World For Tomorrow are great for Prog fans.

I don't know if I could ever title any of my musical interests into the "best song ever".. I feel like I'm ripping credit from other songs as soon as I start narrowing things down.

But, today a song came to mind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlZktdmJR4U

If you haven't experience Battles, please do :) They accommodate to many musical interests, if you don't like the song I've suggested, try another of theirs, it could be a completely different experience.

Warning: This music is intended for only the most deranged individuals.

The drums give me chills, his crash sits nearly 5ft high...haha

**edit**

And Pollyanna, thanks for the Coltrane link, that was out of this World!

Yeah, the newer one was a bit poppy. I remember Welcome Home being exceedingly epic when I saw them live.

I'm not much more than a casual Zeppelin fan, but I'd have to agree... It has it all.

But since everyone else gets to list >1 song then I will too:

"Third Eye" & "Pushit" - Tool (the live versions from Salival)
The Drapery Falls - Opeth
White Cluster - Opeth
Moonlapse Vertigo - Opeth
The Lotus Eater - Opeth
Subdivisions - Rush
Red Sector A - Rush
Symptom of the Universe - Black Sabbath (full album version with that trippy part at the end)

Journey From Mariabronn by Kansas. Their musical talent was awesome from a group of farmers from Topeka, Kansas, plus that vocal outro needs to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame all by itself..

to name a few:

Boston - Foreplay/Longtime

Elton John - Bitch is Back

Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son

McCartney - Band on the Run

Jethro Tull - Cross Eyed Mary

Billy Joel - Scenes From an Italian Restaurant

Rush - The Trees

Zeppelin - Kasmir

I love rock songs with a kicking beat (Kasmir, Bitch) but also songs that have several parts that change things up (Scenes, Trees, Longtime, etc).

Go for it, just trying to avoid the whole, "this thread is stupid" response.

I know it's a generic thread but occasionally some interesting discussion pops up from these kind of threads.
