Default Which RemoTom tom batter heads? Your help/advice please? :)

Hi,

I am going to perchase some new batter heads for my Tom Tom drums, but i am stuck between the.. Smooth White Remo Emperors, or the Coated white Remo Ambassodors (as i have been told they make good tom heads).. and i was wondering weather you could perhaps help me out with some advice.. Im looking for a nice (which i call) normal warm tom tom sound, which kinda has a nice deepish sound to it..

if there are any other Remo heads that you recomend, please let me know.

Thanks guys, i look forward to the replys. :)

I've gone through many different skin types recently in the quest for "the perfect" sound and have also been trying them on different drums, personally my favourite is the coated Ambassadors. They're single ply so have less dampening to a dual ply skin and if you want to then dampen to taste you can but if you get something that already has too much dampening built in you can't lessen it if that makes sense.
To me it also gave a wider range of tuning / dampening parameters that you could experiment with but I'm not an expert by any means so do see what others come back with as well.

I also believe a number of the top of the range kits come with coated Ambassadors and I'm sure it's not for no reason.

I kinda' float between coated ambassadors or coated emperors. Sometimes I go clear because I like to see that deep red wood of my bubinga drums. I probably get more durability with the emperors than anything else, and the slightly darker tone due to the increased thickness I seem to like.

I don't have any experience with the Smooth white toms, but coated heads definitely give a warm tom. I'm go with coated emperors all around. They are 2 ply, but they have no additional dampening built in to the heads--like the pinstripes do-- so they have more initial punch than the ambassadors, but the same nice warm sustain.

Have you considered the Renaissance series? I think they're the best head Remo makes. If you're looking for a warm, deep sound, the Renaissance Emperor would be my first choice.

I really like the sound of Remo Ambassador coated heads top and bottom of my DW Classic toms. In fact I've already bought another complete set for my next head change. This is the only kit that I use Remo heads on. The others are all Evans. When I hear something I like, I stick with it.... for a while. I also use Evans G1 coated and G2 coated heads and they also sound incredible as batter heads.

I kinda like the coated emperors.I think its a versitile durable drum head and sounds better with brushes(don't forget to practice with brushes)And clear ambassadors on the reso side.Studio ,i'd go with coater ambassadors batter side except for vintage drums then I would use Aquarian American Vintage.Experimenting can be cool but also expensive.Tuning is more important tha tne drum heads.Good luck.

Just my two cents, I have been using the Ambassador X heads. They are a single ply head that is 20% thicker than the coated Ambassador. They are warm and open sounding. Easy to tune and really sing on my Yamaha Oak Customs.

I switched from clear emperors on my toms, to coated ambassadors on tuesday, they sound fantastic! The only muffling I needed was a dampening ring on the 14" floor tom, but I tuned the 10 and 12" toms up and my god...I highly recommend them.

George.
