Default Most Beautiful Piece Of Music You've Heard

As the title suggests, I can think of a few personally, maybe

Selene by Michael Manring - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eTBc7aWBGw

That is certainly up there for solo pieces,

I also love Nick Cave - Into My Arms.

Great thread suggestion, Frosty. Looking forward to some tasty stuff being posted. I'd say your posting is the most beautiful bass solo I've heard - not that the competition is great lol. I heard Jaco's solo album perhaps at an age when I wasn't ready for it but I only remember it being impressive rather than beautiful.

I think I'd go for Joni Mitchell's cover of Mingus's Goodbye Pork Pie Hat ... Joni, Jaco and Michael Brecker are unbelievable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mV-lBswnEvE. Nothing makes my hair stand on end quite as much.

Ken once suggested Trane's Alabama to me and I fell in love with it - lost count of how many times I've listened to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j_TDoOPnIA

Tim Buckey's I Woke Up is incredibly haunting with exotic harmonies, and his voice is out of this world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2GEzbg-YfU

And Ravel's Bolero has always done the job for me.

Many years ago I heard a composition by Debussy on the radio that was based on whole tone scales and it gave me the chills ... but I've never heard it again or found out what it was called.

Edit: Oops forgot King Crimson's The Power to Believe II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuLINo7u7T0 and Epitaph http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KogHYeA0ns *slaps wrist*

It seems almost trite to mention it, simply because of its ubiquity...but it stands almost alone in music, for me.

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings

Also, Barber's choral 'agnus dei' arrangement has a special power. The version I know best is the one from Homeworld. If you've played the game you'll remember it as the music on the third mission when they come back to find Kharak destroyed while they were away. That is one of the most affecting moments in any game, for me. Maybe it's something to do with home.

I do remember that and share that sentiment.

That is a very nice string video, but so quiet, I could hardly hear it.

Here is another one I almost forgot,

Yes, it is a quiet one, but it's got the best combination of phrasing, dynamics and sound quality I could find on youtube in a few minutes! The pictures are nice also.

I'll be back to this thread with more ideas as soon as they occur to me...there is some amazing music out there...

...

So is this a beautiful bass solos thread?

Perhaps it should be because there are lots out there, and Lord knows, we have discussed 'everything'- drums at least 18 times over.( Pol, I could discuss Jaco with you till eternity )

Another neat angle on this thread could be the most beautiful/touching music you have heard SANS drums..?

Also what is cool is that Frost just posted something he was uttered moved by. Very cool, indeed! I like these kind of threads.

My offering of beauty and what has destroyed me recently :

HAFER YOUSEF- 'Ud'
Brilliant Armenian pianist TIGRAN HAMASYAN - piano
CHRIS JENNING - contrabass
Awesome Jersey Lad, MARK GUILIANA - drums ( he comes on towards the end of the track..)

Wow, just thought I'd quickly check out the Hafer Youssef link but no quickly about it ... transfixed. The vocal / piano part is too gorgeous for words. The later part when the drums comes in sounds similar to an Andreas Vollenvieder approach.

I agree, Abe. It's great to hear about beautiful and lyrical music for a change.

That is pretty incredible Abe, fantastic performance, so much emotion, really blew me away. The vocalist obviously has a pretty massive range to pull that off, some of those high notes were incredible but to be honest, I didn't spend much time analysing them, I was pretty captivated.

Not sure about the whole bass solo idea, I don't know tons of beautiful bass solos, I guess Sean Malones rendition of Grace by Jeff Buckley was fairly incredible, but I can't seem to find any actual video of him playing it.

I've already made a few recommendations, but things keep slipping my mind, this is one of them, and I have to say it is one of the most heart-rendingly beautiful live vocals I have ever heard.

Isis used to make a lot of incredible music, it was sad to hear they disbanded, but they had good reasons, they felt like they had made their offering to music and wanted to leave on a good note, rather then releasing the same old material over and over.

Glad to hear of another fan, lets hope they find a new muse down the track and reform.

If you are into Isis check out maybe Cult of Luna or Red Sparowes. Isis also draw a lot of influence from Neurosis, particularly Through Silver in Blood.

This one is one of the most emotional pieces of music I've heard, from the guy sitting watching in the background of the Michael Manring video.

For some reason "moonlight sonata," while not neccessarily , I am assuming, meant to be beautiful, being in a minor key, is the best peice of music written, ever.

That is my HUMBLE opinion.

It makes me think of a world collapsing, a songbird grasping its last breath, or maybe something starting new from something dying.

Arvo Part, the composer, he is great. There is another composer I like , Xanakis? is also good.

Alfred Shnittke isn't beautiful, but on the topic of composers...

Arvo part makes some very wonderful compositions.

Yeah, he is stunning, and very creative, he goes through so many different tunings on that fretless while playing that song, but not once do you stop and view it as pretentious, he is using technology to make incredible music in a non-cerebral way.

hey frost! good good idea! and it's gonna be a resource to keep coming back to. and look at these drummers coming up with this stuff!...who would've thought? since you guys are hitting the classical and eclectic, can i just put a couple plain kind of scmaltzy tunes in??

reworking of va pensiero by verdi- practically the national anthem of italy...but redone in a pop version by zucchero...(actually it sounds a lot better if one didn't watch the video on this one-pretty tacky)

Agree about Blue in Green. A wonderfully moody piece.

For something completely different, here's a stunning bit of electronica by Steve Hillage that amazed me with its beauty in the 70s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SG3IA_J3s6Q. Perfect nighttime listening.

Mattias, hate to tell you this but most of your links are corrupted. I tried stripping out some of what looked like the wrong characters but no joy. Glad you included a Keith Jarrett - he belongs in this thread.

Talking of great pianists, Chick Corea's first Return to Forever song always carries me away, with some of my favourite drumming ever by Airto: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2E3W9xygWM
