Default Aquarian SK1 or Emad

Which head would cut through better in an unmiced situation? I like a punch in the chest sound.

The SK I packs a real good punch.
I use one on my thin 8 x 20 Pearl Rhythm Traveler bass drum.
It really makes that little drum come to life.

I can vouch for the SK1 its a great sounding drum head. The wider foam ring of the emad is similar to the SK1 and the narrower ring is similar to the Aquarian force 1/PS3. Correct me if I'm wrong.
For me the choice was easy the SK1 was 32 bucks and the emad would of ran just over 50, (Toronto) so it was a no brainer. I'm very happy with the SK1.
However, a lot of people swear by their emads. They are both great heads.

I think the Evans GMAD (Single Ply, 12mil) would work well as long as you're not beating the heck out of it (playing hardcore/heavy metal/punk). It has a street price of about $38.50 for the 18" version.

Best of luck!

This is why I picked an EMAD2: People said that the SK's were not as loud as EMADs nor did they have as much attack. The price is more, but it's a great head.

I have used both, and for me, the SK1 batter with the Aquarian Regulator front head is a winning combination. Far superior than Emad, IMO.

Not sure which would cut through better. Both good heads.
EMAD = great, IMHO. Probably the best BD head I ever heard.

And it better be - it aint cheap. :)

Whatever you decide or have decided just remember this. That tuning will define what a particular head will sound like. Now the fact that both of these heads are single ply means that they can be tuned to sound similar. So, remember dont get caught up in the hype. Both heads are fantastic, durable, single ply, etc. either will do the job.

I've since traded that kit for another Ludwig classic maple. But I used evans g2 over g1. Clears on that kit. Sounded incredible. I love the evans heads on toms, remo on snares and aquarian on kicks.

Remo PS3. Just kidding.

SKI is a great head. I haven't used an EMAD in a playing situation but there's one set up on a little kick drum display at my local Guitar Center. Sounds fat.

My last few kick batters have been Aquarians. I like Evans on the snare (I've had dozens of Remo heads "pull out" on me) and Evans coating has lasted much longer in my experience.

Hi All,
My new Gretsch kit came with an E-Mad fitted. I tuned it up and down but ended up replacing it with an SK1. I love Evans on my toms but have never had a bass drum head that comes close to the Super Kick!!!

One thing I can say is the sk1 has punch but it also depends on your bass drum too. It's sounds very punchy on my 22x17 Yamaha beech. Ps3 ebony reso and nothing in the bass drum.

Since the sk1 muffle ring is permanent it would depend on how you are using the emad.
I believe that the wider ring of the emad would cut slightly less than the sk1 (assuming both heads are tuned exactly the same and you are running similar resos).

But the thin ring and no ring at all would cut more than the sk1. But I've never actually tested it to see. I would say that the closest sound to the sk1 would be the emad with the wider ring. Whereby the sk1 would be a tad more open. But I'm speculating.
Whatever head you buy do not muffle inside the bass drum this will kill your volume even more. Don't worry if the drum sounds too resonant on its own, when you start playing it will sound perfect.
Finally, I would tune for attack. above wrinkle won't cut it. Unless your mic'd of course.
