Default Treating rusty metal

I'm selling an 80's pearl wood-fibreglass kit - with it there is an old metal snare. I have got the snare sounding great with new heads and now I want to improve the way it looks.

It is completely rusty - i don't know what metal it is. Has anyone had any experiences of removing rust from a drum which is almost covered in it? I'd like to restore it if possible..

Default Re: Treating rusty metal

Crumpled aluminium foil and some water works wonders to remove rust from chrome, so I would try that first.
