Default 8mm threaded Cymbal Stands other than DW?

I recently bought one of those DW Cymbal Stackers, but found out it wouldn't fit on my Sonor stands when I got home, I do need an extra stand, so I might as well get a DW, but would like to know on which other brands' stands it'll fit.

Thanks, Fox.

Most cymbal stands have an 8mm screw at the top.
What is the size of your Sonor stand screws?

Some of my really old stands from the 70s and 80s have a 1/4 inch screw.
Are your Sonor stands old?

Nope. They are the 400 series. Just measured them, seem to be about 6mm.

The Sonor stands are an unusual size.
All of the stands that I have bought for many years are 8mm.
Pretty much any stand that you buy will fit that cymbal stacker.
8mm is the norm.

Great, thanks! I'll just take the stacker with me to the shops, anyway. Wanted to know so I could do some surfing online prior to going there.

Pearl and Yamaha are 8mm.

Tama is 6mm.

I can't say I recall every brand is, but as far I know, those are the only two sizes made any more.

Although, as bobdadruma pointed out, older American made stands were non-metric. The first store I worked at over 20 years ago actually carried wingnuts for american stands. I've not seen them since.

That's interesting because I have three Tama cymbal holders that are only a few years old and they are 8mm.
Also, I use the Tama plastic cymbal nuts on all of my stands because I like them and they are 8mm.

They may have switched in the last few years.

They used to be 6mm.

I bought a Tama rack in 1992/93, and the cymbal arms are 6mm and not compatible with my Pearl stands.

At some point in the 90's, Danmar or one of the others started making the Tama style plastic cymbal nuts in 8mm, and a few other jobbers followed suit.

Every drum shop I worked in stocked 8mm and 6mm wingnuts, the 6's for Tama, and the 8's for most everyone else. But I've not worked in a drum shop in 10 years, so a lot of stuff has changed since then.

That makes sense because 6mm in close to 1/4 inch.
Back in the 70s even the Pearl stands that I owned were 1/4 inch USS thread
When they went metric they used 6mm.
I had to drill some of my older cymbals because they wouldn't fit on the protectors that came on the 8mm stands.
Every stand that I have bought in the past 5 years is 8mm.
I started buying gear again about five years ago after not buying any for 20 years.

Yeah, the problem people have with vintage cymbals is the hole isn't always big enough for modern 8mm stands.

I've not had a reason to buy a new cymbal stand in some 13 or 14 years. It's not like they break all that often, even under heavy use.

It was the same with me.
I only needed new stands to replace old heavy pitted ones, plus I began to buy more kits so I needed more stands.

Just as another option, Gibraltar stands are 8mm also.
The Brake Tilter they use on the heavy and the flat base stands is great.

I was a hardware junkie for a couple years getting stands and building things and modifying...it was fun, but I accumulated a lot of stuff haha!

Fortunately, a lot of it is on the kit my son uses, and I have a rehearsal kit outside of my home, so most of it is getting use.

These days for gigging & on the home kit I'm using DW single braced (7000) and DW Flat Base stands. Got sick of carrying the heavy stuff(!!) and it's well sturdy enough, even under heavy playing.

Me Too!
I use single braced stands by Tama and others for my Gig kits.
I leave the heavy stuff at home on my studio kit.
I have no problems with the lighter single braced hardware either.
I grew up with the stands of the sixties and seventies.
I was happy to find that todays light stands are much better than the ones that I grew up with.
