Default Recovering Stolen Equipment: Laws, Procedures, Insurance process

Guys,

just a quick question. I recently had a Manu Katche bass drum, some Sabian/Wuhan cymbals, and some assorted hardware stolen from my car after it was stolen for joyriding. The theives left the car, but took my drum equipment and a few other items from my car (CD player, etc.)

I contacted the Police Department and will speak with a detective of Major Crimes tomorrow about keeping an eye on local pawn shops and I'm keeping a daily eye on the Craigslist of the city where my equipment was stolen to see if the thieves try to sell the equipment there.

Beyond that, would either my car or house insurance cover the losses? What's the laws regarding "items in your home" and does a car and its insides get covered under either car or home insurance policies? I know that, legally, a car is an "extension of the home" and therefore subject to the same laws regarding search warrants and seizures...but I didn't know if the same legal logic applied to it regarding items stolen FROM cars outside the home.

Any other advice or suggestions regarding increasing the chances of recovering my drum/cymbals or at least getting compensation for its theft would be appreciated.

Worse case scenario, I'm already looking at Wuhan New Traditional cymbals to replace the Sabians/WuHans I lost....

Yes, you are covered by most policies.
File the claim for the gear along with the damage to your car.

car or home insurance? The car, amazingly, was just fine. They just stole the stuff, smoked and drank inside the car.

But hey, if somehow I can get SOMETHING from it, I can use the money toward purchasing replacement equipment.

Your auto policy will cover the theft.
