Default Preventing Rim Rash

While it may seem an obvious, does anyone have a suggestion as to what works best to prevent rim rash on the bass drum hoop where the pedal is attached? Have a new kick and thought I'd ask. Possible answers may be anything from a thin layer of rubber to duct tape but I don't want to create a mess and thought you folks may know what works best based on your experience.

Thanks for your valued feedback!

Gibraltar sells rubber hoop protectors for $3 apiece. If you don't care for paying that sort of money, you can cut one out of an old rubber mat or car floormat.

You are on the right track. I have used pieces of bicycle inner tube before but now i use a piece cut from a thin mouse pad. I'm sure there's some a-hole out there marketing a piece of rubber just for this and charging some ridiculous price for it.
Max Roach did it, Elvin Jones did it, but Roy Haynes didit and didit and didit.
