Default Remo Black Suede vs. Evans Onyx - GO!

I'm looking for some sweet black heads for toms on my black drum set.

The heads that are on there now are just ridiculous, I bought this set used and the guy didn't know what he was doing or something - the resonant heads are old batter heads and vice versa...it's a big mess.

Anyways I have a big kit and the Remos are cheaper, but I've always been satisfied with Evans. What's better out of the two in your opinion?

I've got tom sizes of 12, 13, 14, 15, and 18.

Thanks y'all.

I just put a set of black suede's emperors on my 83' tour customs and they sound great.

depending on what sound you're after they have more of a coated head sound instead of a clear head sound.

Remo states it's a mesh between the two but they sound more coated IMO.

my Yamaha kit sizes are 24"bd,12"tt & 16"ft wished i would've put them on a long time ago.

Good Luck,
Bonzolead

i put onyx on all my drums, did lots of research on the 2 and was originally leaning towards the black suedes until i actually sat down and messed with them. their great heads no doubt but sound wise not for me. i talked to the guy at the drum shop for 45 minutes going back and forth honestly not becuase their black but both are advertised as very dark heads with lower tones then the other lines and thats what i wanted. out of the 2 onyx are lower then the suedes with a darker tone, the suedes i would say just slightly brighter tones closer to just a normal coated remo amb then on the same level as an onyx.
but thats also just what i heard while trying them....

actually the guy at the drum shop said they were intended for more jazzy styles. if your playing that kind of music those would be better then the onyx, if your going more metal i would go with the onyx over the suedes.

i would suggest just buying 1 of each and trying them back and forth and see which one you like more.
