Default help!!! new snare batter head torn

okay so i've been playing for about an year and recently i bought a pearl forum fz snare drum and after a mere five days, the batter head ripped from the edge. its like 4 inches torn. i don't believe i tuned the head too high that it might be torn, nor do i hit the head too hard. Can anyone help apart from the fact that i'll have to buy new heads and to avoid this from happening again.

Well, I think there are four things that could have happened:

1: The head was too tight
2: You hit it too hard
3: The head was faulty
4: The bearing edge on the drum is messed up, putting a lot of strain on the head at that point, or maybe even cutting into the head

The bearing edge is the edge of the drum shell where the head rests:

It might have cracks, dents or imperfections in it.

Pearl Forum? The stock heads are likely to be of low quality. It's done you a favour by breaking early.....get a coated 1 or 2 ply head from Remo or Evans. It'll make the world of difference. When you can, upgrade the reso too, it'll improve your snare ten fold.

Well, check your bearing edge while you're at it when you change out he head. There could be something wrong with it, but Pearl's pretty consistent across the board I would think.

Not much to add except that I agree with what's already been said.

Definitely check the edge for any inconsistencies, rough spots, etc. before putting a new head on. I don't think high tension alone would cause the head to tear, especially at the edge, but high tension coupled with an imperfection in the bearing edge certainly could.
