Default Suggestion- Gear Reviews

Hey, I'm always researching different types of cymbals and drum equipment and I thought it would be a good idea if there was a section in DW where we could post gear reviews, sound clips, demonstrations, etc. in a more organized fashion.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I'm tired of having to look through all different websites so I just thought I'd throw this idea out there.

Have you looked at the site.?? The Drum gear section is just that. It looks like this. It is nothing but reviews, opinions, questions about gear etc. Check it out.

I have around 300 posts so I know what the forum looks like, I mean having a page for each drum series/cymbal line where it could be more organized.

How would you wish to reorganize the current gear page?
Like this,

Just Zildjian cymbals

Just Paiste cymbals

Just Tama drums

Just Pearl drums

Just Pearl hardware

Just Tama hardware

ETC
ETC
ETC

Is that what you mean?

It would probably work better if it wasn't located in the forums, but yea sort of like that. Then in each brand page you could find 1 page for a specific product that would have all of the information you can find. Then if someone wants to find review on a certain product they wouldn't have to make a new topic for a product that's already been discussed.

Im digging this idea, so people could get in depth details of an item just browsing the Drummerworld site with many peoples ideas and thoughts.

I would suggest a file or folder on your computer with all of the major percussion manufacturers web sites listed. here you could look up the drums, cymbals, or hardware that you are interested in and then go to the forum to see if anyone has experience with your selected piece. i also use Google to find product info and reviews. To have all of this on the DW forum would eat up valuable band width and cost a ton.

if all it was was typing and such it would not use up a whole lot of bandwidth or cost a significant amount. a lot of peoples time compiling info on every single product, on the other hand, could take years.

i agree it would be nice to just have a place (you wanna look up a pearl boom stand ####) just click pearl/hardware/stands/cymbal/##### and there's all your info and be able to do that with any manufacturer all on one handy site, that would be awesome.....

is this the right venue for it? i'm not so sure, i definitely would not put it on a forum. if it were me i would do it more like a musiciansfriend kinda thing, more descriptive, more info, better pictures, allow reviews............ wait......

why not email musicians friend and ask them to put up better pictures and better info, job done.......

I really think that they would be putting that email in the trash bin pretty quickly...

Musiciansfriend already has decent photos, manufacturers write up and customer reviews of most products. They are the ultimate wish book for most musical instruments. Most photos let you click to enlarge them. they are quite a resource.

yes they are a great resource, but i've often found very brief descriptions of the products (yeah that's the manufactures fault since they write those) and lately the pictures have gotten better, the enlarge thing they did a few years back was a nice improvement and often the manufacturer supplies pics as well so i guess their doing pretty good with the resources they have.

I'm waiting for a data mining applet rather than using "advanced search" or a structured folder system as a means to get access to personally relevant information. Such a personalized way to find information will be an improvement upon "structured" means to store information like a cascading folder system of rigid search capabilities.

I agree that MF has some very useful information, but if you look at many of the reviews people are constantly comparing 2 pieces of equipment that are in completely different leagues. I mean, look up some reviews on pro cymbals and count how many times people compare them to ZBT's. It shows that many of the people writing those reviews have little experience with pro level gear whereas if people from this website did reviews it would be far more reliable.

Choosing gear is confusing, even for a long time player!

I help many forum members privately pick their gear.
They zero in on Me for some unknown reason, They PM Me, and they consult with Me to answer questions about Drums, Cymbals, and Gear.
Usually they are beginners who are overwhelmed by all of the drum porn (as we affectionately call it) that is shown on this site.
I recently spent a month going back and forth via emails and private messages with a beginner before he selected his first entry level kit.
It all worked out and he is very happy with his choices.

I know that there are many other regular posters on this site that also do this for beginners.
We don't find them, They seem to find us!
It usually begins when a beginner posts questions about gear and we try to answer them.
They latch on to us because something that we said in a post made them ask more questions of us and it goes from there.
It is a great responsibility and also a rewarding task for us experienced members who provide this insight.

I often lay awake at night hoping that I gave the best advise that I could!

I don't know if a reorganization of our gear section would hinder, or help.
It seems that we as drummers all have to start somewhere and kind of find our own way through trial and error.

I think that it may be best if the gear section stays as it is.
Why review and pigeonhole Drums, Cymbals, and Hardware like a sales website?

Let people see everything as it is and ask questions from experienced drummers that they seek out on this site to help them select what they want.

JMHO!

i think that a big, organized, gear review section of dw would be great. www.drumsetconnect.com has a gear review section if you would like sort of an example. a section with everything from every manufacturer would be very nice and would give these new guys that are buying their first stuff or even more seasoned players that just want an honest review from a fellow dw member.

you could have like drums, cymbals, and hardware. and then budget, mid-level, and pro. and then brands and then series and then actual products. include pics and whatever else you would wanna throw in there to better describe the product. for cymbals....you could make a test video and embed it, along with a review.

the review could have like pros and cons and the star system like musicians friend.

The latest drum review from Drumsetconnect.com was over a year ago, so that must not be the place to go or the method to use. Just sayin'

i know but i meant that as a rough design guide. just an example of what it could possibly look like. and besides, drumsetconnect.com is a whole lot smaller than drummer world. i am also a member of drumsetconnect and it is quite a helpful forum at times. mainly when you don't get much of any help on a bigger forum, you can put the same thread in on there it get loads of attention just because of so many less people putting in threads there.

but anyway, that was just meant as a rough example.

Well on this forum you have started 5 threads and you have 47 replies. Not bad. Some advice. This forum has been here for a while. There are so many questions that have been answered time after time that often when someone new comes on and asks the same questions as previous posters, there will not be a lot of answers. I would spend a lot more time reading what has already been asked and you will probably find your answer. For instance, look at the number of posts on the how to clean cymbals thread. You would think that anyone new coming in would read those answers, although it may take a month, and find their answer. But it takes a lot of time so the easy way out is to ask the same question again. Then you get an old fart like me who goes, God, not another clean your cymbals question, so I do not reply. I have over 7000 posts. I may not have a life but I always look on here for an answer before posting another question. There is so much information on this site that to me the idea of making new categories for reviews for every major drum and cymbal company is ludicrous. Thats why my first reply to Cottontop was to look at the different categories already on the first page and most of the reviews would be there. If someone posts about a new drum set we always ask for pictures and the specs, which usually leads to a review or an opinion at least. The internet is full of photos, reviews, pricing etc etc etc that to put all of that on this forum would make it look like a Musicians Friend catalog. I just don't see it or see a need for it. Sorry, but spend some time reading rather than looking for instant gratification. I just saw a review today for the Gibraltar Catapult bass drum pedal and we haven't heard of that thing for almost a year. All good things will pass.

Logistical nightmare to moderate.

A sub forum for EVERY manufacturer, then another sub forum for EVERY offering from said manufacturer (drums, snares, stands, pedals, thrones, cymbals, cowbells...need I go on?). Way too many sub forums to list.

Theoretically, I like the idea.......the practicalities of keeping it in order, I shudder at though. Who in their right mind would stick their hand up to moderate that?

I vote that we give that job to the Honorable Mayor of DW.

What? He said that he had no life!

...You guy's aren't getting this at all. It wouldn't be in the forums, look at what cooldrummer posted. There wouldn't really need to be moderators.

And it really wouldn't take TOO much work.

So although it's NOT on the forums....it's still on DW, but there's "NO WORK INVOLVED"?
I guess it just sets itself up and moderates itself does it?

You sure I'M the one who's not getting this?

At the end of the day, it's not my, or anyone else's call I guess. If you really think it's worth running with, PM Bernhard and run the idea by him.

1. DW does not only consist of a forum, there are other parts, so those quotes are basically irrelevant to each other.
2. I said there wouldn't be TOO MUCH work.
3. As I said before, look at cooldrummer's post. He posted a link which is a good example of what I'm trying to explain

Yes, I've followed this thread mate....including cooldrummer's input. His example looks very much like a forum to me, but that aside, I still contest there would be a fair degree of work involved. People posting reviews in the wrong place (happens all the time here), reviews being doubled, trippled, quadrupled because no-one bothers to use the "SEARCH" function to see if one already exists, would need to be moved or amalgamated (again, happens all the time here). Someone has to do all that.

Look man, I've come across many of your posts, you're a good guy and I like your input.....so I have no wish to get into a forum pissing match with you. I just disagree with you that:
a) It doesn't have to be on the forum - I mean, how would members have any input....we have no access to make changes on the official DW site. How do you write and post a review but through the forum? Is Bernhard expected to test and review every concievable peice of gear as well as maintaining the site, plus collating information on, and adding new drummers from the wishlist?
b) It wouldn't take much work - For the reasons I've outlined above and then some, I think it would take an enormous amount of overseeing.

As stated, I like the idea, I just think the practicalities are an issue.

But as I said, run it by Bernhard. he may feel differently than I do.

cheers.

I have never had a problem finding gear reviews here on DW.
I saw Stan's thread on Agop cymbals. I went out and I tried them. I now own two Agpo Rides;
I don't play double pedals anymore. I see posts here about the latest doubles. I go to the music store and I try them out for myself. Just for fun.

Same goes with snare drums, heads, etc.

I like the randomness that exist here in the gear threads.
I don't always buy what I see. I just try things that I never would have tried otherwise.
Its fun to look through the threads at random and explore based on what you have read.

It wouldn't be the same if it was all set up like like a library.

bob is right. it really wouldn't be the same.

and what pocket said, i'm sure all of us like the idea of an organized gear review system but it could take a very long time to get up and running and a huge pain to oversee.

i use the search function all the time. i also google what i would normally search for here on dw and see what answers i get at other forums as well.

i have also lost faith in the musicians friend reviews. they are ok, but i think the majority of them, especially in the budget gear, are just like "buy this now! it is the very best thing in the world no matter what!"

I used to write reviews for a drum magazine as well as interviews etc. Believe me, it is a lot of work. On the surface it sounds good, and I even considered putting my hand up as a meaningful way of contributing...but it is a full time job! I'd have to be hired. And as a separate section, not part of the forum, it would be a job. Now for my expertise I require a minimum of $70.00 AUD per hour. Over a 40 hour week that is $2800.00 AUD. $145,600.00 per year.

Bernard, I am happy to take this on if you are willing to pay me.
