Default Help choosing new heads for my Mapex Meridian Maple kit!

Hey everyone! This is my first post ever on the drummerworld fourm.

I have recently purchased a Mapex Meridian Maple 6 piece kit and I love it! But its about time for some new heads. They kit came stock with remo pinstripes on all the toms, they sound nice but I'm looking for a fatter sound but I still want some resonance. The shells are 7-ply all maple, 5.8mm toms and snares, 7.2mm bass drum. I just want what sounds best.

I have a friend who has brand new 10, 14 and 16 inch Remo Vintage A coated Ambassadors and he says he can give them to me for cheap so I would only have to buy a 12 inch head at store price. Also I've been practicing this technique I've seen Jojo Mayer use where you bend the head by sliding your finger across it after striking the head. I've been fairly successful with the pinstripes and its a fun little trick so I would like a head that I am able to do that with. I have also had alot of bad experiences with Evans heads, I'm a Remo guy.

So I'm not sure if i should take the Vintage A's or go for something else. Any Meridian maple players have any suggestions on what sounds best?

hey
personally, i use Evans G2 Coated on all my Toms - they give a nice fat warm sound. id recommend those to anybody. however, you say you had bad experience with Evans, so Remo's Coated Emporers would probably do a similar job to the G2's.
on the other hand, if your looking for resonance and plenty of tone, a single ply head is the way to go - Evans G1 or Remo Ambassador. i would still stick with coated though, if you want a nice fat warm sound. the only problem with single ply is that they aren't as durable, and you'll find you break them quicker.
as far as the finger trick goes, youll find that you can do that on most drums, as your simply changing the tension of the drum while its still resonating, but to maximise the effectiveness of it, a single ply head with probably have more give in it, and ultimately bend the pitch further.
hope this helped,
Tom Bevan

This is a relative subject. I love the way Tony royster gest the great fussion sound out of his drums, I also love the dry sound JoJo gets.

Look like weatherkings... do you like this sound?

Or check out some of these..?
