Default I hate my Ebony Pinstripes

Title says it all. I'm just tired of them. They're 7 years old, and sound terrible. It's time to replace them.

I think I'm sold on the Aquarian Performance II heads. I'd like a really phat (yes, with a ph) sounding tom, that still has punch, and doesn't resonate for ages. On the other end, I don't want them to sound like paper... I play anything from church music, to rock, to metal, so I don't care about fitting into genres, just having good sounding drums.

With that in mind, do yall think Perf II sounds like a good move? Willing to take any recommendations!!! (and what about resos?!) My tom sizes are 10, 12, 13, 16 if it makes a diff.

Ask if I forgot to mention something important :)

Anything will sound better than your current 7 year old heads. That really is a long time to go without changing.

Performance II will probably give you the sound you are looking for. They will be more open than the ebony heads but will have less sustain than a regular double ply head. Use any clear single ply head as reso, and you will be good to go.

Yeah, about 6 years longer than you should go.

I agree, (although I'm a Remo guy). Performance II's are very similar to the Pinstripe.

I know, I know. It just wasn't until recently that I got a job that allows me to budget a bit more toward my drums (hence all new cymbals/rack). I figure I'll replace the heads now, and by the time it's time to replace them again I'll be saved up enough for a really nice drumset upgrade!

I'm more of a Remo guy too, but it seems like more people lean toward the Aquarian? I'll probably get Clear Ambassador bottoms though, so I'm not a total traitor!

Thanks for the responses.

A different choice, then, sticking with Remo, would be the Powerstroke 3. Still, a nice "phat" sound, with just a tad more overtone to it. It's basically an Ambassador head with a built on richie ring.

Evans G2 coated over Evans G1 clear resos. The coated head will kill some resonance but still give you a Phat sound.

You'd be surprised how good a 'new set' of Ebony Pinstripes would sound, wouldn't be my choice for a new head though.

Ebony Pinstripes were never designed to sound good, just look cool.

And wow, 7 years. Yikes.

I've heard Pinstripes on kits that were like 10 years old, I know the horrible sound you speak of

NEW HEADS!

So I bought all Performance II's for batter, but wasn't sure which resos to get, so I bought both a G1 and G2, and the G1 honestly just rings out too much for my usual play setting (even with gel) so I got a full set of G2's for resos (I know most people will kill me for doing that tho!)

Anyways, they sound stunning. And no, that's NOT how my moongels sit, it was temporary!

Like others have said the performances 2's are very similar to pinstripes. They tune up very easy. Theres nothing wrong with 2 ply heads on the reso side either. It's been done before. If you are happy with the way they sound, that's all that matters. When my dad gets the chance he's going to get pinstripes as batters and get emperors as resos, I'm very interested in hearing how that will sound.

I can heavily sympathize with you on this, even though you're changed out now,

I play with ebony pinstripes, and they're from a used kit, so I have no idea how long they've been on that bad boy. To add to the sonic agony, I have stock resos. It's killin' me man.

Personally, I think you should have gone with the classic Emperor/Ambassador mix, it's the remo favorite and with good tone control(moongel, rem-O's) they could fit into anything.

I did think about that combo, along with a few others. It's just a little easier (for me at least) to not have to use gels or O's. I was actually set back by how good this combo sounded, but I guess anything would sound better than what I had!

@coldhardsteel: You're in for a big treat whenever you do get new heads! (Though I'd recommend sooner than later)
