There are MANY factors, like your budget, your vehicle, how many drums you own, if you are planning on touring, etc...

Soft cases: Lighter, take up less room, cheaper, you can carry multiple drums in one hand
Hard cases: More protection

Personally, I use hard cases. SKB roto-X and some XL Air Elite cases. The roto-X cases are great because they're sturdy, they have a padded AND lined interior (no foam chunking off in your case), and they're stackable. The Air Elite cases are for drums with extra large mounting hardware like RIMS mounts. They offer great protection, but only if your drum is the EXACT size specified for that particular case (a 12x8 drum wouldn't be protected as well in a 12x9 case).

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure more people will chime in on this one...

Probably the most affordable bags are what Music Go Round sells new. They arent the best protection, but they do offer some protection for your drums. If you can find Humes and Berg Enduros used, combine the two. Drum in the Bag, Bag in the Case. It will serve you well. If you can afford more the Tuxedo cases and the Enduros are a great combination.
