Default Anyone know where I can get a coated smooth white emperor head?

Back in the early 80's, Remo's 14" coated emperors had a white film rather than coating over clear film like today. I swear they sounded different and better. The vintage emperor is close, but they are a tad too thick for my liking. I went to Remo's site and they do make a coated smooth white emperor in a 14" size (BE-0114-JP), but I can't seem to find anyone who carries them. Does anyone have any idea who may carry them or is it a special order item?

I see this question was posted before on DW. I guess the coated smooth white is the same ply construction as the vintage emp...2 plies of 7.5 mm film. But, the film on the smooth whites may be different than the vintage emp film. I wish it was 2 plies of 7mm film instead. Hmmmm....now I don't know what to do......

Hi Clint,

I was able to get smooth white emperors from MF. Not sure if that's what you want? I think they also carry the smooth white ambassadors too. I did put the new coated ambassador X's on my oak kit and so far very pleased. It's 20% thicker than the ambassador but still a single ply head. You can check them out here.

Hey Pete,
I'm looking for the coated smooth white. I haven't seen them anywhere, but I'll ask my drum guy at the music store I deal with about them. Thanks for your help. Hope all is well with you too.

I didn't think such a thing existed..."coated smooth" is like asking for a non-ported bass drum reso head with a port hole. But, I googled it, and you can find them just about everywhere!

All these years--I never knew! I wonder how they sound? Do they have the attack of a smooth head, but minus the attack like a coated head?

Wow, new info for me, too. I've had smooth white coated heads before and only really knew it when the coating wore off, you could see white underneath. I thought it was annoying when I'd wear through a coated over clear and have this window into my shell. Especially once when I replaced all my heads and some were coated clear and some were coated white. I thought it was random - that Remo just coated whatever Amb or Emp they happened to reach for at the time.

they're either coated or they're not.

Ludwig use to make smooth white heads (with no coating). they may still have them but i'm not sure.

Oh...so, are they simply smooth white heads with coating on them? That seems to make sense...who wants their coated heads to be clear underneath?

I was thinking that it was some kind of satin finish like on the Aquarian Modern Vintage heads or something--coated, and yet smooth at the same time.

A lot of you guys are missing the point of the question.

Cdrums21 correct me if I'm wrong.

Remo used to make Coated Emperors by using 2 7mil plies of smooth white film and THEN spraying the coating on top. Now they simply coat clear film, which is observable in heads where the coating has worn down, pretty simple. Now some have suggested the Vintage Emperors. That would be my suggestion as well, because I believe that the reason that they introduced the VE's was because of all the requests for Coated Emperors made with white film instead of clear film, which would imply that there are no white film CE's to be had, or else they would have simply made more of those instead of releasing an entirely new product. That being said, there are differences between the CE's and the VE's. For one the film to me looks to be a bit on the off-white, maybe even yellow side of things, which would suggest that it's a different film that the smooth white. Also, the plies are 7.5 mil instead of 7. Minor differences, but hey, we're talking about drumheads right?

IMO the VE is a great head, especially for snares. Non-drummers told me that it was the best my snare had ever sounded the first show I played with a VE on the snare. So it's a good head. Might not be what you're looking for, but they're my go-to snare heads ever since they came out.

The model you want has the model same number, but it has a suffix code after it.
I THINK it's TL, but I'll have to make sure.

They are smooth white film with coating on it.
It's a different sounding head than the ones usually in stores (clear with coating).
You'd have to order a set from a shop, as I doubt stores carry anything but the "standard" heads anymore.

I'll check with my shop guy later today to make sure on the suffix.

The suffix code for a White Film Coated Emperor is JP.

So whatever head size you want, you need to add JP to the end of it.
For example, BE 0114JP would be a 14".
