Bob, I'd love to help out but I have three 'toons to do before I get to you! But, rest assured, I will.

Today's toon (a montage) isn't about drumming, but it says a bit about the artistic environment in which I live ...

Hang on to that thought. Mixed feelings are the real ones :) Babies are Jeckyll and Hyde:

A few milestones to look forward to - the baby achieving a sleep rhythm (ie. 3am isn't a great time to wake up), being able to hold its neck up so you don't worry about its head falling off, finishing teething, successful toilet training.

Later, when you are both feeling time pressure, these kinds of issues could crop up:

It was inspired by a Max Roach video. I imagined him sitting in the music room, sweeping with such artistry, and his wife thinking of how all that skill could be put to good use ...

Bob, I'm currently trying a new technique (again) for one of the early suggestions, but until I can do a proper one of you I couldn't resist dashing off this quick montage, which felt very appropriate :)

Polly if I had an office job that is exactly the way it would look!
I worked as an entry level computer programer back in the early eighties for a while. I lasted about six months before I was back to working on cars! The office cubical just isn't for me. I was so bored at that job that I would fall asleep at my desk. Sitting there writing line after line of RPG and COBAL code! This was before the invention of the PC when the computer filled a large room and used IBM punch cards.
I have to runaround, I can't sit and work.

Tell me about it. I cannot deal with paper. If I file it, it's forgotten forever so I have to leave it all out and then these piles grow and spread. I never have to dust my tables at home. Bills are often paid after I get a reminder notice.

Having said that, I like sit-down jobs - they're safe and comfortable. My job is 99% on the PC so I can find everything with search functions. IMO the trick is to carve a niche where your eccentricities are tolerated. These days I dress casually, sit on my chair Buddha-style (such an old hippie) and get up and down 20 times a day. Once you have a rep as a useful loony, you are cut a lot of slack :)

Programmers often carve this kind of "mad scientist" niche for themselves. Bob, you're probably too normal to be a programmer. I've known many programmers (and dated a couple) and they tend to be either 1) Aspergers or 2) neurotic hypersensitive brainiacs or 3) planning to move into another line of work.

Gah! Each time I try to draw you Polly, it looks like some crazy scientist or scary women-like creature. I'm not giving up. so beware! A drawing of you is coming soon!

It sounds like you're on the right track. When I was little my Mum used to say I was like an absent-minded professor because I'd get caught up in my interests and forget everything ... and after my comment about your Adam's Apple and referring to you and KIS as being like gangling praying mantises I can hardly cry for mercy :)

Here's a drumming cartoon I found on the web (I suspect the cartoonist plays guitar):

As you'd expect, locating the Swiss coast proved a little challenging so I had to choose another setting. Again, I'm not sure I quite captured them but I gave it a go. I had a malfunction with the layer order so the bass drum legs found themselves behind the drum ... like one of those mistakes most audience members wouldn't pick up, but the musos would be rolling their eyes ...

Funny thing, once you start drawing them you realise they don't look much alike at all!

Good idea, Andy :)

Nice one Polly, I'm looking at my watch to guess how long it will take Bernhard to post a funny retort. That has to be blown up, framed and on Bernhard's study wall by lunchtime!

I'm still visualising Steamer sitting astride his flying saucer size ride cymbal, dressed in full death metal gear, decending onto a stage filled with debauchery with the tag "now that's what I call a ride".

For much more humorously cruel toon suggestions, pm Larry. He just might let you in on a little gem we discussed a while back, if you pen a super complimentary toon of him that is.

LOL Stop it, Andy! I have a small queue as it is and dangling irresistible morsels in front of me like this is making it very hard! Oboy oboy oboy I can sooo see that one in my mind's eye.

I've speculated about Bernhard's reaction or non-reaction to the toon but I can't even guess it. The man is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Just in case ... guys, it's been great knowing you, take care, and ... Thaard, we're still waiting for your toon :)

Sorry, don't mean to bump, but there were a few loose ends I couldn't let go. Maybe no one else would notice the difference between this version or the last, or care in the slightest, but I do ...

Glad you enjoyed it, Bernhard :) After all you've done for us drummers it's the least I can do. I probably should hire KIS on commission as an ideas man ...

We posted at the same time so for now you have the Luddies. Avatar-sized pic attached. I forgot the sizes so if it's too small, let me know.

To my "models" ...sorry for the delay. I haven't forgotten you.

Abe, for some reason I really struggled with this one. No, I got th eyes wrong. Let's try again. No, I got the mouth wrong. Try again. No, the face shape isn't right. The hair's wrong - back to the drawing board. What colour were his Yammies again? And so on ... I have another head in the file with both eyes open. And another head where you like you're 18 years old. Mix and match heads!

Hope you like small, pampered dogs :)

Lol, Pol.. wonderful, thank you! You made me look much younger than I am.. and whats with that Salvador Dali lower lip? Its melting off my face. and the Pirate eye..?

Well yeah, but you did catch a vibe!... The true skill test of a good toonist..

My pooch is Leo and he's not small ( The original Scooby Doo personified ) who loves nothing more that resting his head 2 inches from my bass drum and sleeping through all the rehearsals. Musically, he is quite democractic. My other two, who've moved on were called Jaco & Mingus, so you're not that far off on the Jazz pooch. : )

An earlier version had you looking even younger still! If I added pimples it would have gained the attention of the Classification Board which seemingly finds any picture of someone aged under 110 to be "kiddie porn".

It was a tricky one because the hunk-a-spunk shot you sent me didn't capturing what I experience of you on the board - the sardonic wit and the bleeding heart thing :)

Originally I just had you with the cute dog but it was way too sappy and didn't capture your edge. Thankfully Kenny and his thread came to the rescue :)

What can I say? You have a bloody big, pouty lower lip like my grandfather lol

Tempted to re-do with Scooby Doo wrapped in the blanket :)

Haha, no Andy. He was wearing a black T-shirt.

As a matter of interest I just found another type of drum cartoon

Andy, the original is a fair bit older with both eyes in working condition ( so far ), I dont wear hoodies, but Polly's got my rakish 'thuginess' down pat, in her art.

Larry's and PQ's lyrical moments in the Pretentious Music thread reminded me of a cartoon I did back in 2003, titled Gonad Rock:

PS. Sorry Philly. I'll get your pic happening once I get inspired again!

Super cute toon, Jason! Love the panda :)

Inspired by another thread:

This style is a lot easier than a caricature but, Philly, at least the ideas are finally starting to flow again which is a good sign. It's been a long dry spell!

Here is a rather realistic representation of me on the drums:

(yes i know it's hand-drawn, and rather terribly hand drawn at that too!)
