Default From Paiste to Sabian...

Okay, I bought some Paiste Alpha cymbals, and I love 'em, but I took advantage of Sabian's sale on the AAX's and... wow. Holy crap. I am in AWE of these things. So I'm slowly, oh so slowly, migrating from the Alphas to AAX's.

But first, the setup as it is now:

As you can see, I have an 18" AAXplosion Fast and a 15" AAXplosion crash. Now I just need to start meandering to my ride, hats, and 2nd main crash...

awesome pies!

although if I may ask, what is your snare stand on? Looks like it's sitting on a cookie tin.

I went through the exact same process. Two years ago I still swore by Paiste Sound Forumlas... and I still use a sound formula ride and china to this day because they are still awesome. But my hats, splash and crashes are now Sabian (the splash always has been). AA hats and crash, AAX crash and B8 splash...

My cymbals are all Sabian. I have a 15" AAX-plosion crash too, and I love it, it's absolutely beautiful!

What do you like about the Sabians? They seem to me as somewhere between the smoothness of Paiste and the character of Zildjian. Generally I've found the sound in the few rides I've tried so far in shops to be a little harsh.

Are they consistent like Paiste or variable like Zildjian?

All righty, let's respond to everything in order!

1) My snare stand's on a trivia game box. The screw hole stripped where it tightens so it can't be anywhere above bottom position. Hence, it's on a box. My ride stand and one crash stand have the same issue, hence my ride is all the way down and the crash has plastic wrap jammed into the stand to keep it up.

2) Yeah, I'm gonna stick with my Wuhan Chinas, but the rest are likely to be Sabian AAX's all around.

3) What I like about the Sabian crashes is the "shimmer" they have as opposed to the gong-like quality of the Alpha. I'm looking for a ride that has a quick decay and my Alpha Full Ride has more sustain than I anticipated. Also, I absolutely LOVE the Xcelerator hats.

The Paiste cymbals are definitely fantastic in their own right, they're just not, y'know, MY sound.

I used to have an Alpha crash and tbh, I didn't like it very much =P. I actually enjoyed my 14" PST5 thin crash more =)

I'm on the fence. The Alpha has a lot of attack to it that the AAXplosion definitely doesn't, but I'm not sure that's necessarily the sound I want.

I like Sabian and all, but I don't think they're much good for anything besides crashes.

I was interested in buying HHX Studio Crash from them not too long ago. Then I realized I needed the money from selling other cymbals for a cymbal vault, stickbag, etc.

Hope you like them though.

Well, to go back a tad, I admit I'm not ENTIRELY sure about the ride. Part of that is I'm not really sure how rides should sound, y'know? But I'm definitely hoping to get some AAX hats. The metal and Xcelerators are both amazing to me.

Keep in mind, saying you prefer Sabains to Paistes by going from Alphas to AAXs is almost like saying Paistes sound better than Sabians because you transitioned from B8s to 2oo2s. Its's not exactly a fair comparison. Congrats on the AAXs, though. Nice pro level cymbals!

If I were you I might think about some new hardware before cymbals. Congrats on the AAXs though, they are some fantastic crashes for sure.

True, but I like the AAX's so much that I don't see any need to try Paiste's other lines, y'know? I'm not saying Sabian is a better BRAND, just that I'm making a switch!

And yeah, the cymbal transition is down the road. Hardware is first. Actually, the order goes like this: pedal -> snare* -> hardware -> cymbals

*The guy who's buying my old kit may or may not be buying my Acrolite. If he does, I get a new snare next. If he doesn't, I get a new snare later, probably before new cymbals.

From the clips on Sabian's website... yes. Yes it does. Wow.

Have to say that I prefer Paistes.

I wish I didn't because I'd like to find a some cymbals with character that sound great but most Sabians and Zildjians I've heard don't quite cut it to my ear, especially rides.

Maybe the shops in my area are getting the cast-offs that aren't considered good enough for US and European markets?

Which line of Paistes? I've heard great stuff about the RUDEs.

And I'd wager that maybe it's a matter of taste? I mean, obviously each brand has their advocates, sometimes it's all dependent on personal preference. For me, these AAX's are just fantabulous. I now have my dream cymbal setup in my head. The next year will be spent amassing it.

No! Don't sell the Acrolite!

To keep on topic though, AAX is a great line, imo.

Acrolite's goin', man. I don't have a need for it. I'd rather have a Black Magic or a Jordison signature snare.

And we're a step closer! My AA Metal-X ride came in the mail...

(18" Sabian AAXplosion fast crash, 15" Sabian AAXplosion crash, 20" Sabian AA Metal-X ride)

So, quick background: I sold ALL my Alphas and my ZBT's, plus my old Pulse kit and the Acrolite snare. So the new kit will be!

- Tama Superstars: 12/13 rack toms, 16" floor tom, 22" kick
- 13x6.5" Tama Metalworks Engraved snare

- 14" Sabian AA Metal-X Hats
- 15" Sabian AAXplosion crash
- 18" Sabian AAXplosion fast crash
- 18" Sabian AAXplosion Metal crash
- 20" Sabian AA Metal-X ride
- 16" Wuhan China

- Tama Iron Cobra Power Glide doubles with the cobra coils
- Gibraltar rack

I've ordered the hats, I'll be picking up the Metal Crash this Saturday along with the rack and the snare. That's the full kit save maybe a splash and another Chinese.
