I would go even further to say coated
Remo Ambassador, or an equivalent 10 mil single-ply head. These heads make the drum sound a little bit "rounder", warmer and darker than a standard clear reso head, and in conjunction with a coated batter head like the Onyx may eliminate the need for external muffling (depending on the individual drum).
I've been using coated Emperors over coated Ambassadors for the awhile on my birch toms and they sound great.
