Jaco Pastorius

True great - he has phenomenal rhythm and melodic genius. The combination is sublime.

I've been playing bass for 30 years and drums for 5 years. I saw Jaco three times with Weather Report in the late 70's early 80's.

I'm undecided but I'm gonna have to go with Joe Lester of Intronaut. Great mixture of pure intensity and psychedelic jazz lines (and he has a fretless five string!):

Danny Walker plays for them --- great drummer and band!

Les Claypool.

However, honorable mentions go to Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse and Ryan from Mudvayne.

Electric bass - Victor Wooten
Upright - John Patitucci

As an average bassist (drums are my first instrument), I have come to appreciate those musicians who can play the stuff that I can't...

A few days ago I probably would have said Les Claypool but I feel like I'm going to give my vote to:

(Bass roll?)

Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane. Just started truly paying attention to his bass lines and... god damn.... I'm astounded. Perfect for the music.

No Joe Osborn he was a session musician his playing can be heard on records by groups such as the Mamas & the Papas, The Association, and The 5th Dimension to name a few. Osborn can be heard on Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" and the 5th Dimension's version of "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In." and many many more

Yup, the Chili Peppers are from my home town, Fairfax High School if I'm not mistaken. Flea is a good bassist and can be quite melodic in his playing, but personally I'm not a big Chili Peppers fan

Knowing that, I still feel the same about Casady. I still believe that he is one of the most melodic bass players IMHO

I absolutely cannot believe nobody has mentioned this guy yet (ie - where's all our jazz aficiandos?):

http://www.stanleyclarke.com/frontpage.htm

He is not my favorite, but is arguably the most talented on all bass instruments, not just the electric four string.

Upright, most definitely Charles Mingus. Never heard any bass player whip up a band (and, of course, the drummer) like Mingus did.

Electric, might be Bona or Pastorius... Pastorius.

McCartney period end of story that's all finis.

I've listened to PM for 45 years and been amazed. Versatility, melody, beat -- and he sings while doing it. Watching/listening to his playing on Wii Rock Band transcripts amazes even more. The transcripts aren't perfect, but wow.

Incidentally, some may laugh but Ringo's up there on drumming, too. Strawberry Fields is a classic. Listen to Lennon's acoustic startup version on Anthology and appreciate what Ringo's drums added to it.

Since the question is FAVORITE and not BEST, I'm gonna go with Dan Briggs.

John Entwistle of The Who, no contest.

Second favorite is Berry Oakley (RIP)

No doubt that Jaco Pastorius is the best bassist. His best is with Weather Report. The song is Havona.

Certainly the heaviest rhythm section, and I'm not talking volume ... well, I am, but in a geometric sense :)

Never seen Bernard P playing ja ... mmmph before. Straight backbeat but swings like mad. I've seen AJ on a few album covers but I never really noticed him because other things in the music were grabbing me. Maybe that says something about his accompaniment skills?

Does anyone remember Prakash John's melodic bass in Lou Reed's band on Rock n Roll Animal? It was a big fave of mine in the 70s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FdWPeHFAMk. Fantastic rock n roll band.
