Default What have you had thrown at you on stage.

Have you ever had anything thrown at you or other band members while performing.

What was it.

And did it make contact.

I have never had anything thrown at me but I did see the most awesome reaction following a beer being thrown at a singer whose concert I was seeing....bear with me its a long but hilariously awesome story...I swear to god it is true and one of the coolest things I have ever seen!!!
We were at a Jack Ingram Concert (Jack Ingram is a pretty popular "Texas Music Artist"...Youtube him, he's got some cool stuff) about maybe 5-6 thousand people maybe more...at an outside venue...anyway...we were close to the stage and guy in the first row...obnoxiously drunk, throws a full beer can at Jack...and without flinching he catches it, sets it down and takes his Mic out of the boom mic stand, spins the stand around and throws it down...smacking the guy right in the forehead almost knocking him out...then he steps on the base plate of the tilted mic stand shooting it back to him, grabs it one handed, spins it back around puts his mic back in...picks up the full beer that he had caught, takes a swig and starts singing again...without missing a single beat....almost like he had practiced it...my buddies and I stood and watched in disbelief...coolest thing I've ever seen at a concert. I had always liked Jack Ingram but was never a huge fan...until I saw that!!!

A few things come to mind. A full can of beer crashed into the wall behind me one night. It didn't hit, but only just missed.......Needless to say I wasn't a fan of that delivery system, and one of the few times I was glad to see heavy handed tactics by the bouncers........obviously didn't know I got mine for free!!
Weed/reefers was another, although that was far more appreciated at the time. I also remember breaking a stick one night, throwing it out into the crowd in true 'rockstar fashion', only to have it thrown straight back.......ingrates......I mean, who wouldn't want my broken drumstick to souvenier??

Looking back, I feel ripped off..........Tom Jones and Elvis got panties......the world is an unjust place.

I feel like I'm missing out on something here, having not dealt with any flying objects personally. I never understood the throwing panties thing. But I often wear jeans and shorts and the logistics of panty removal and projection were beyond me, even if I was that way inclined.

The closest I can think was was the time we were setting up and an angry wife came storming into the pub, screamed abuse at her husband sitting drunkenly at the bar, and threw a beer spill tray at his head. He ducked and it split open the head of the guy sitting next to him.

We feared the worst because the band played fairly twisted music and this crowd were feral, but amazingly they tolerated us. We'd been told that the week before they had physically ejected the band playing there. Maybe they were being chivalrous because of our band's female contingent?

However, after the guy with the head wound got bandaged up he got completely drunk and I expect the concussion didn't help. While we were packing up he started wandering. He staggered into the Bose PA we'd hired and knocked it over. It landed on our singer's flute, which was lying in its open case. Destroyed - bent like a V.

The next week our singer brought her new song in, called Bent Out of Shape :)

Quite possible you did say that "out loud". But you're there, and I'm here. I am, however, pretty sure you typed that.

Well, the 80's in L.A., was, a hedonistic of times. And it helps if you're not involved in a committed relationship. Also, post-curricular band performance activities do, or did, sometimes involve certain good will/promotion ventures. Then, it always helped that the "young ladies" were good looking and wearing short skirts/dresses. Sometimes, for the good of the band, ya just gotta "step up to the plate and swing".

Dunno Harry. I never felt the urge to be ravished by someone based on their instrumental or vocal prowess or to claim the transient reflected glory of celebrity.

I did get excited when I first saw Midnight Oil's Robbie Hirst playing drums - all those power-packed hero fills and sweaty biceps - but not enough to throw anything at him. I did buy their debut album the next day, though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKatbQfjPIU Turn it up :)

Not 100% sure what you'd be swinging when you got to the plate, but I can take an educated guess :)

No, in this case, it was just "the L.A. scene". If you ever get to see the Penelope Spheeris movie "The Decline of Western Civilization Part II - the Heavy Metal Years" ... we weren't Rock Stars .... we just partied like rock stars. Youth Gone Wild.

It all seems so surreal. What's it like to have someone throw their underwear at you? lol. I'd be worried if I was playing and saw a pair of jocks being tossed in my direction.

Does the band try to remember the thrower and think, "Okaaay, noted"? Is there gnashing of teeth when the thrower is dragged away by a sensible friend? Take us there, Harry :)

I play mostly worship music. Not much panties and beer there...

I could try to pay my girlfriend to throw some panties at me on stage. But I don't think she will.
It is a dream, however, to play a song with one hand while drinking a beer with the other. I'll do that at a non-worship gig one day.

I'm the one that did all of the throwing! When I was young, stupid, and strong I would frequently throw sticks at the backs of band mates when they ticked me off with their playing!
I haven't done that in years, I guess that I've grown up a bit. I still feel like doing it from time to time though!
I also threw a stool from the stage at a loud mouth drunk once. I did warn him several times to shut up first. That also was many years ago.
Now-A-Days I just laugh things off and I don't take stuff that bothers me to seriously.
About twenty years ago I began to use meditation to control my anger. It worked!
If any of you suffer from anger management problems, I suggest that you get help learn how to control it. It made my life a lot better.

panties
bras
beer
shotglasses
full trashcans
pool cues
cueballs
mic stands
guitars
barstools

I used to play in a hardcore band and our fans would do everything they could to make sure we never played the venues ever again. especially if they had heavy handed security it would just bring it on more.

Well, let's see....lit matches, guitar picks, bottles (glass and plastic), lit cigarettes, phone numbers crumpled up on paper, shot glasses, hats and shoes, drumsticks (!), a flap of someone's , uh, powdered medicinal drugs, and some kind of unidentifiable food (at least I'm pretty sure it was food). Some people need anger management classes or something. Some people just really get into the music sometimes. Hard to tell in the heat of the moment which ones are which!!

Had an M-80 thrown at us while playing an outdoor gig for an outlaw motorcycle club in the 80's.

It went off. No one was hurt...yet

That guy got beaten up pretty bad. (Not by us, his own handled the matter)

Piss balloons, beer cans, condoms, and lord knows what else was tossed at us at this one show we did, and someone even threw up all over our stage and the monitor.

I guess thrash metal isn't really an accepted form in the whole "emo world" yet. Never again will we open for a screamo/emo (wrongly called "post-hardcore") band again.

One gig I did with a metal band fairly early in my career, they were throwing beer in cups onto the stage. One cup hit a hot footlight and the thing exploded. Mystifyingly, instead of escorting that guy out, the venue owners shut down the entire show only four songs into our gig (after we had already begged the audience not to throw any more beer). Ah, dues paying...

When I saw this thread I thought, "That's weird. I've never had anything thrown at me." But then I remembered something that happened back in the seventies.

The band I was playing in had a gig on Halloween with several other bands, I think it was Halloween, and before we went on the singer told us that he'd arranged to have some people throw pies at him during the last song. It was a big stage with plenty of crew around so I didn't see how anything could go wrong.

So we're playing the last song and right on cue a handful of girls start throwing pies at the singer. But their aim wasn't very good and one of the pies hit the bottom side of my ride cymbal, exploded all over the place and I had sticky pie all over my drums. There was a big glob of pie stuck to my cymbal.

The thing is I was playing this ride cymbal and it went from sounding like, well, a ride cymbal to sounding like hitting a shovel with a pencil.

As soon as the show was over I ran backstage, changed my clothes, tried to rinse the pie out of my hair (this was way before the days when bottles of water were available) and then went back to get my cymbal. It was pretty much ruined. Sticky crap all over the bottom side. I could have strangled the singer, but he thought it was all hilarious.

Ive never had anything thrown at me or my band, the crowd is usually too busy beating the crap out of each other. Well i guess i could count the one time some girl "threw" her breasts in our lead singers face lmao.

We played an outdoor show once and someone tossed a dead raccoon up on stage. Our singer/guitar player wasn't impressed at all and walked off stage. I was confused by both the raccoon and our early departure. We were headlining that one, too. Weird.

Another time, after our set, some heavily tattoo'd punk rock dude liked my drumming enough to toss me his watch. It seemed like a really sincere gesture, even though it was a Rolex knock-off that probably never worked. I guess it's the thought that counts.
