What's so amazing about her story is how fast she excelled. She began playing guitar at 14. Then three years later she switches to bass. One year later, she is then offered a endorsement deal from Sadowsky Guitars. Just two years after that she toured and recorded with the Allman Brothers. How do you explain this? How do you get that good in such a short period of time? It would be interesting to find out her practice routine during those first four to five years.

Now that would be insane! I've got a buddy who is a big fan of his, although what I hear from him, squarepusher isn't one for working with others at all. He does all of his own stuff doesn't he?

Abe introduced me to this clip with Tal playing to show me that Vinnie had played with Jeff Beck, which I didn't know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIFFRHBCPzA.

She's amazingly accomplished for someone who's played such a short time. Some people just have the magic inside.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Stanley Clarke. Definitely in my top favorites! Victor Wooten kicks butt too. He's probably my favorite living electric bassist.

Check out her playing at the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show. Vinne C is on the drums and Jeff Beck takes over hosting duties for about a half an hour. He brings on Sting, Buddy Guy.

Tal is stacking her resume with some great players. She is good.

She is also fortunate that she's been the benefactor of several great musicians that carry on the tradition of finding up and coming talent and cultivating and promoting them.

This is nothing new, of course, but Jeff Beck has done this before in his more than 40 years in the biz.

She's going to continue to have a great career.

James Jamerson, the great Motown bassist. Arguably the first "master" of the electric bass.

I was waiting for someone to drop his name! It's been about two days. The only reason I didn't was because I decided to stick to the "only one allowed".

Actually, I was wondering if I could change my answer to Bootsy Collins. I also have a question, How good is he and why is he so good. As in what is it he does that sets him apart?

And then back to the Favorite Bass Player of all time.

Bootsy Collins is perhaps the funkiest man ever to walk the earth. If I had to pin it down, I'd say 1000% ability (to be funky, a closely guarded secret) coupled w/ 1000% confidence

You are totally confusing me. You make a choice and then ask us why? Shouldn't you be the one stating why you think he is the greatest?

Funk/jazz is to bass guitar what rock and metal is to lead guitar. The fancy speed demons or shredders flock to that genre. But my favorite is still Louis Johnson:

I don't know if you've ever given Mothership Connection from Parliament Funkadelic a good listen, but if not. Get off your ass and do so! It'll explain it all.

And James Brown's Sex Machine album; Mr. Collins is on that piece as well.

Because I think of them as two different instruments:

Double bass: Charles Mingus

Electric bass: Jaco Pastorius

He is the one that turned the bass guitar into a "front man" instrument. It should be noted that Motown legend James Jamerson had a big influence on McCartney's playing.

Yea Paul is a really interesting bass player, very melodic, as was Jamerson. I love that style of playing, like the bass line is a whole separate song. I just got an idea for a new thread!

Combustion - Dick Lovgren

Favourite bass-line (for a song, not a solo), too much pressure on the skull for the average person to handle.

...but my favourite bass player would be Victor Wooten: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSlAS4X-uSA
