I've done it. It's a slightly warmer sound, you can really hear it from behind the kit. Not so much from 5-10' or more away (what's that, 2-3 meters roughly). Personally I like a clear PS3 with a coated Amb reso. It's worked nicely to get a good boom out of it. Also with the clear adjusting the small pillow inside makes a lot easier to see.

I'm about to put a coated Powerstroke 3 on my new Rogers kit (well it's new to me, it's a '76 Londer VI - will post pics soon). Should give it the sound i'm looking for, warm and round. I don't want a clicky tone.

I use a coated Ambo on my vintage Gretsch 22", to my ears it just fattens up the sound a little more.

I use a coated PS3 on the batter and a Coated Ambasador on the reso. I have a knock-off tempurpedic pillow on the inside against the batter and a t-shirt sleeve slightly toughing the reso... the kick is a 22X18 but sounds more like a 24X16, nice warm round tone with good thump...I love it.

I just finished playing my kit for the first time with a coated batter on bass.

I had an Aquarian T2 Super kick on my Maple 20x22, and now have a Remo Ambassador. Quite the jump but... oh lord. I love it. I absolutely love it. It's such a fat, open, funky sound. Clyde Stubblefield would be proud, if not envious.

Though a flat, cardboard bass sound can be utilized in many genres (metal, rock, pop, hip hop, etc.) this open sound is just amazingly unique. Not only is the difference in pitch unique (that being the only difference to most drummers using clear batters) the tone and actual resonance is unique.

In the end, everything in this and most others posts are just opinions. You've got to be willing to spend the money to try everything if you want to find your perfect sound.

I use a coated Ambassador on all my bass drums.

They sound great and last a long time for me.
I use a impact patch made from old Ambassadors too, so the sound is like having no patch. Since it's no glued on, every time I change the patch, it's like having a new head.

I've tried a million different heads, and this one just works the best for me.

I have a Fiberskyn PS3 on the 22x18" Element bass drum. I think that counts as coated. :-)

Pretty groovy warm, low-end sound. Not quite as punchy as the smooth white Ludwig heavy Weather Master batter head on my Classic Maple BD.
