Default Baseline E-kit

One of my hallmates and I are interested in splitting the cost of an electronic kit for practice, but neither of us know much about e-kits. We are prepared to pay up to $500 (total) and would appreciate any advice on what to look for. Thanks.

Shop used, and for $500, you should be able to pick up a Roland or Yamaha kit. My 13 year old nephew just bought a used Yamaha DTXpress for $500, that came with a small Simmons amp.
