I don't recall the Lnns (at least not the early ones) as having MIDI, but I do remember there were some hacks for burning your own ROM samples

but haven't seen one of those in...well, longer than I care to admit - so my recall may have been modified by years of G&Ts

You are probably correct, perhaps i have my timelines a bit backwards by about a year or thereabouts. Maybe they used the external trigger function? The 80's are slightly hazy due to being a musicians in the 80's in Miami...
