Default What are the best heads to use on Pearl Export Toms??? help!!

Hey everyone,

I have a Pearl Export kit and its time for new heads. I've been playing with Aquarian Performance II heads on my toms and I was wondering if anyone out there has gotten a great sound with any particular head on Pearl Export kits??

I play in southern rock/metal band and I love a deep booming sound on the toms, but obviously not ringy. Any tips for a certain head combination on these toms? I've tried taking the bottom heads off, leaving them on for the resonance (which seems best), and I've been using REMO dampening rings. Any help would really be appreciated!

I played the Performance IIs for a while. They were to dead. OK on the floor tom, but to dead for rack toms. Why not try Coated Emperors over Clear Ambassadors for a warm, but not to dull sound. Liven things up a notch! I also once used the Remo rings many years ago with Ambassadors. I soon did away with them! I can't imagine the Performance IIs with damper rings! That's really DEAD! I only use the Damper rings for recording sometimes as an effect.
I kind of like old drums:)

I've tuned enough pearl export kits and found that the ebony pinstripe is a good match for that kit. Being an intermediate kit the export (imo) does not respond well to amb or emp batters, however with the pinstripes or EC2's would be the evans counterpart, when tuned properly does not require any muffling whatsoever, It gives a deep thumpy sounds to low toms with some resonance and for the higher toms a punchy sound.
You may try emp's but I don't recommend ambassador type heads on these drums.
Just mo.
