Default upgrade kick pedal or heads first?

hi,

i was wondering, should i update the batter heads on my toms or kick pedal? im trying to save money, so it came down to the Evans EC2 Clear Batter Head or the Gibralter Prowler Single Pedal.

on one hand, i get better tom sounds. but i already have Pinstripes on them (and i can tune, so they dont sound [i]too[i] bad.
on the other, i could get a really sweet single pedal to update my no-brand pedal i currently use.

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...ead?sku=447850 for the drumheads

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...dal?sku=490044 for the pedal

any advise or suggestion is great!

Speaking from personal experience, I went with the heads first. Then again I had the original heads that come with the set. It also had a crappy pedal, but I thought of it as "if I can get moderately used to this piece of crap, whenever I decide to get a nice tricked out one, I'll already have some skill in using one".

I also ended up picking up an original Ludwig Speedking, because I gradually got better to the point where the pedal was holding me back. I also recently purchased the 9000 pedal from DW, because the speedking isn't sturdy enough anymore. At least not without mounting the SK to a metal plate. However throughout that time I was still using the replacement coated emps over ambs I picked up several months ago.

Well I'd say the two arguments are;

1) heads will improve the sound.

2) A new pedal may improve your playing.

However;

1) You already have decent heads

2) There's no guarantee that this will happen, but a more responsive pedal will should it much easier to translate what you brain and foot are doing to your kick.

If it's heads or that particular pedal I'd go with heads. If you want a pedal I'd save up my money and look on Craig's list or e-bay and pick up one that is sturdier and will be much smoother and easier to play. DW 8000 or 5000, Tama Iron Cobra, Ludwig Speed King, Pearl Eliminator all will be much better pedals and you can get a better deal buying one used. You'll be much happier in the end
