A true living legend, among us.
Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) has a lot of respect for him, He considers Cozy (Colin Flooks) as an great drummer, who has given so much to the music and drums...forever!

Just listened to Rainbow Rising again for the first time in may years. Cozy Powell is such an inspiration - strong playing, great feel, masterful technique. He's as good as Bonham in my book and would be just as famous if he fell in with a more famous band.

I saw him with Rainbow in the mid-70s and he was impressive. I usually find drum solos pointless but his 1812 Overture solo was a a buzz.

But IMO Cozy's most imaginative playing was on Jeff Beck's orange album, as in Ice Cream Cakes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N74N-JmjBo8) and Sugar Cane. Plus some tasty clean drumming on Definitely Maybe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhrsDEnUlJM).

I always like Cozy one of the most powerful drummers of all time IMO right up there with Bonham I always liked Jeff Beck's "Situation" & "Going Down" which I believe Cozy played on, My favorite drum sound Cozy had was on Whitesnake's "Slide it In" so powerful & in your face.

RIP Cozy,

I looked this up because I was curious, but you can currently buy 162 albums he drummed on. Others aren't available anymore. Even with all the playing he did, he was primarily a studio musician. Plus 162+ says alot about what others thought of his drumming.

There was some discussion of Powell replacing Bonham but Led Zeppelin broke up. I think Powell would have been a great replacement - he and Bonham were friends - and taken LZ into a new era.

The guitarist in my band wrote a song for Brian may which charted on UK's Top of the Pops quite a few years ago.

He also collaborated with Cozy personally. Would have been awesome.

Heres the song

Yes when Bonham passed he was a candidate for the job but Bonham & Plant were good friends kinda a respect thing but I always wondered, He's one of the few if not the only drummer that could've. done it IMO

New to the forum, just wanted to chime in and say that Cozy is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Such power, taste, and skill... He helped shape modern rock drumming!

Modern Drummer is gathering votes for their annual reader's poll, and I hope all of you will go to their web-site and vote for Cozy to be induced into the Hall of Fame!

I've been listening to the Rainbow Rising album this morning. The more I listen to this, the more I appreciate Cozy's musicianship. This is one of the great hard rock albums of all time.

I remember seeing him with Whitesnake, and a couple years later with Emersen, Lake, and Powell - that show was amazing! He would've been great in Led Zep. Oh well.

Wow, that is cool you got to see him. He definitely would have taken Led Zeppelin in new directions. Powell wasn't as nuanced a player as Bonham, but he is more driving and the double bass work would have been an awesome addition.

Listen to the song "Stargazer" that is Cozy's raw power.
Speaking of double bass drum work, he really knew how to used them, did not fill every hole in the song....that only comes from professional drummers, and Cozy was a great one!!!

Cozy was one of the most powerful drummers in rock history!!.

The intro for "Stargazer" makes me shiver!. He also knew how to be dynamic, just listen to his work with Jeff Beck.

His early 70's "Glam Rock" singles were kinda cool too, "Na Na Na" and the memorable "Dancing With The Devil" (I think I'll do a video playing with that song, such amazing tribal beats!).
His double bass patterns and powerful steady rock grooves are just outstanding,I really miss that kind of drummer nowadays!.

RIP cozy!.

One of the records I drummed when I was 18! Cozy toured England with Plant to promote that album that year (I think 84)

He was one of the greatest pros in the business, and those in the business who knew him, loved him. I know Graham Bonnet well, personally for about 25 years and he loved him and said him and Don Airey were his best bandmates, Ronnie Dio once told me he was the sweetest guy you could meet, and even Michael Schenker smiled broadly when I met him after a gig and mentioned Cozy to him. (Michael is not a big talker.) I miss him every time I hear those bass rolls following the snare snaps he did so well. His drums and his cymbals were B I G and his sound cut through and he SWUNG!

RIP Cozy!

I agreed Ian but only if they'd meshed well, you can put the best musicians together but if they don't. have any chemistry it might as well as never have happened.

True and filling the shoes of our dear Bonham Sr., it´s a complete challenge to any candidate / professional drummer! You know...That Bonzo feel is something else!

I'm glad I had the chance to see him live in '82 or '83 with Withesnake, the drum solo with the 1812 Ouverture by Tchaikoswski was astonishing. (With Ozzy Osbourne as an opening act with Tommy Aldridge on drums)

Cozy's the reason why I started drumming 30 years ago.

*Jealous rage* :( haha I am jealous. I seriously wish I was born earlier than '86. I've missed out on the good times!

You're very very lucky :-D Bonham got me into drumming...then I found out he had died 6 years before I was born. Pfft! :-)

The other day I spotted this vid from Mike Packer, he has just joined the forum...

Hi Sarah

Love Bonzo and Cozy...

Well here's Led Zep's Whole Lotta Love from the Forcefield album with Cozy Powell on drums...very different than John Bonham's version, but still very cool.

Today is Cozy Powell's birthday. He would have been 64. Almost 14 years have past and I am still saddened by his loss. I honored him by" Listening to Still I'm Sad" from "Rainbow On Stage". Tremendous drum sound tremendous playing. I'm glad he has got some fans here.

Love his playing. "Rainbow Rising" is an incredible album, one of my top 10 of all time. Too bad Led Zeppelin couldn't have brought Cozy on and kept going.

The second track, Pots and Pans (starts about 4:18) is especially good.
