Agreed, it seems like they put the least amount of effort into the most important drum on mid-level kits. The MCX snares might be the exception to that rule...though I wouldn't want one anyhow.

They're 6mm shells but they're fairly thick. For as thick as they are, they're extremely warm sounding. They project very well. I love the slightly-rounded 45 edges...it gives them lots of fat, low-end. I had one of these in a 3pc. w/ a wrap finish last fall and got rid of it when the Unix arrived. I'm glad I did, I got this one much cheaper w/ all the extra drums and the lacquer finish. If I sell the kick I will have gotten it for about half the cost of a new one.

Aww GD - if it makes you feel any better, I think the Renown (and the MCX) sound every bit as good as a kit that costs twice as much. It's a pretty luxurious "beater" if you ask me. :)

I feel bad now for phrasing it like that.

I should have said "A high quality, but less expensive gigging kit" Since I'd be risking a $1K kit instead of a $7K kit.

If I ever get back on club giging, beleive me I would never bring a high price stave kit, I would rater buy a medium pro level kit, because anyway in a club it doesn't make a huge difference if you play pro or semi pro kit and you don't get mad if something get broke on the kit.

I treat my Rockstars as if they are Unix, but that's probably because it's the only thing I have :-).

You posted it here because you know we understand what GAD is all about (a lot of us have it as well), and we all enjoy looking because we all wish we could go out and buy kits like you do. Maybe you're just looking for affirmation?!?!?

You know, I sold my DW kit to pay for the Unix kit. While waiting for the Unix to be built, I picked up a 3pc MCX kit because the deal was too good to pass up at Guitar Center. I personally feel that the MCX is a far better kit - for much less. I'm sure DW owners would consider that nonsense...but the MCX sounded bigger, fatter, louder and warmer to me. Not only that - the hardware and overall build quality was much better IMO.

I already know what to expect from these babies, that's why I picked 'em up!

I'm gonna man-up and go for the 3-up, 2-down setup...we'll see if I have the marbles to handle it. :D

I'm probably still going to sell one of the kick drums and replace it w/ an 18", if I can find it. That way I'd have an alternate for getting into small spaces.
