Default Drum Head Choice

Hey,

I just recently got a Mapex Mars set, and am needing to replace the heads. The batter heads on the toms are Evans G2 and the resonant heads are Remo Ambassadors. I was thinking about changing the batter heads to Evans EC2 heads. Would they be ok with the Remo heads still on there? Or do I need to change the reso heads too. If so, what would be a good combination with the EC2? Thanks!

Thomas

There is no need to change the bottoms because they are Remo's however, if they are old... say a year or so, go ahead and replace them if you can. You can mix "brands" we all do it.

Well when I got the set it was covered in dust and rust, and I have no clue how long they were sitting in storage. The heads were beat up pretty bad so I decided to go ahead and change them out. I just ordered Evans EC2 batter heads as well as Evans EC Reso heads. So I guess I'll see how they sound once they come in. Also, is there a way I can replace the tom mount on the bass drum? The screw on the right side that holds the tom secure in the bass drum won't go in all the way, it just spins in place, so the tom swings around alot whenever I'm playing. Could the grooves be stripped?? I'm trying to save up for a drum rack, but I was hoping there would be something I could do until then.

Lots of folks on this site use Evans G2 coated over Evans clear G1. They tend to have just the right combo of projection with out too much ringing.

Yeah, I thought about doing that, but I was also considering the EC2 over the G1. I went to the Evans website and saw a video that had a bunch of head combinations and I liked the sound of the EC2 over the EC Reso. If I don't like the way it sounds on my drums I guess the next time I change heads I'll either go with the EC2 over G1 or G2 over G1.
