Default Alesis Surge cymbals with Roland TD-10

Has anyone come up with satisfactory settings for using the Alesis Surge cymbals with a Roland TD-10 kit? I've tried the settings provided by Alesis in their compatibility guide and I get almost no volume out of the cymbals. Also, there seems to be a very small sweet spot on the cymbal bow to get anything out of them, if I strike the bow anywhere else I get nothing, which sort of defeats the purpose of replacing the Roland PD-7 pads.

All suggestions are welcome.
