Default Sennheiser e609 or e906?

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my current kick drum mic from an SM58 to a Sennheiser e609 or e906. I play in a covers band and most of the places we play have quite a small stage and our singer's enthusiastic dancing (bless him) and our guitarist's constant shuffling to find sufficient airspace for his headstock have led to numerous (albeit accidental) occassions where my kick drum mic gets booted over or the lead gets caught round someone's foot! I've decided to go with one of the Sennheisers partly because I can place it flat up against the kick reso head, reducing the space taken up in front of the kick drum and also because they can take the high SPLs. I'm also going to replace the mini boom mic stand with a desktop-type cast iron base straight mic stand. I don't have a porthole because I prefer it and would rather not have to cut one just so I can put the mic inside the drum to 'get it out of the way'.

Anyway, I guess my question is... who would go with the cheaper 609 as it's purely for live gigs and who would go with the 906 for the better sound? Alternatively, has anyone had success in micing the kick from the batter side alone?

Thanks,

Cubby

I would suggest the e902 for a kick drum
