Default Coated vs Clear experiment

I have been trying an experiment with Clear Ambassadors on both my PDP CXR and M Birch kits. The premise was that the clear heads would have a clearer sustain and sustain a bit better than the coated equivalent. Clear ambassadors were used for the reso heads on both kits

Clearer sustain - They did indeed have this. It did however also have a distinct "boing" in the sound that is much less prevalent if not completely absent in the coated version.

Better sustain - Maybe a slight bit more but not enough to worry about.

On both kits I opted to pull off the clear ambassador batter and return to the coated ambs on the PDP's and the Suede Ambs on the M Birch kit.

The Suedes on the M Birch are just sweet for melodic, fusiony playing. I may try coated Emperors at some point on the PDP kit for a fatter Bonham-esque vibe for that kit.

This is all of course, strictly my opinion of the results on these specific kits. Your mileage may vary

Coated = warmer + more stick definition

Clear = more attack + less stick definition + brighter

The sustain is neglible in most cases.

I know. I was just testing a long held premise that turns out to be pretty accurate. I was hoping that I might like the clears. I LOVE Steve Smiths sound and he gets it with Clear ambs. Not a fit for me though it seems
