I owned a similar setup earlier with a 20" kick.A change of heads to Evans EC2's gives a warm "thumpy" sound, while G2 clears yield a more penetrating sustain. They tune up very well, and are very "convertible" to a small jazz setup, with the addition of a 14x7 tom.Mapex are really great products,Although I am moving to the Saturn,or Yamaha Oak Custom.(Another thread.)
Good luck-they are very nice.

That finish and set is really nice, good cymbal choices too.

-The toms seem shallower than usual do you like them?

Thanks, I've only had the kit for 'bout 6 months and am extremely pleased with it, I got it ordered into my local dealer after seeing a similar kit on ebay and took it away straight away. The sound is very rich and tonal, yes the toms are quite shallow, about half the depth of conventional ones but I love that as it provides a low laid back playing area.

My main concern when buying the kit was that it would lack power, but I couldn't of been more wrong, I play loud anyway but this project's sound better than my last main kit (a 90's Pearl Export), especially the bass drum which is awesome, even without any kind of damping.

Nice kit, I am a huge fan of short toms and if I had the choice on my kit I would have had 10x5 and 12x6. I can imagine that you can set your toms pretty low. Nice work.

Hey,

such a nice kit.
Unique tomsizes too. I´m a fan of those flat toms.
Color is great but your cymbals are awsome! Sabian makes so good cymbals.
The second snare looks like shoud would sound better with new heads and a new tuning.
:D I like to build...

Your right the second snare could do with a bit of an overhaul, that said the heads on the rest of the kit are the stock ones and pretty new at that, so that probably makes snare #2 look even more battered than it is ;)

I'll be changing the heads soon anyway, probably gonna go for a Ambassador/Emperor mix, with Powerstrokes on the kick and snare.

Absolutly sweet!! I also own a short stack, a Basix Short Stack though. I like the sound of the shallow toms, very solid and versatile!
here is my Basix btw:

Nice kit! What are the sizes of the short stack toms? I mean like depth x diameter? They look beautiful!

Thanks, they sound great, even better than they look - tho' I was trying to get the kit in the Vanilla Pearl wrap but it wasn't available :( That said the Tobacco Fade lacquer finish has really grown on me :D
Plus - theres always recovering if I ever do feel like a change. ;)

I recently tuned it using a DrumDial and it made it sing.

The sizes

10 x 5.5
12 x 6
14 x 10
16 x 14

Sorry for digging up the bones of this old thread, but i need some help. (I have PM'd the OP also.)

I have just purchased the very same kit, plus an 8" x 4" tom (In Tobacco fade no less!) But i'm struggling to find anyone who sells/makes cases for Short stack toms.

Can anyone help. I need an 8" x 4", a 10" x 5.5", a 12" x 6" and a 14" x 10". (Kit is rounded of by a 16" x 16" FT and an undrilled 20" x 18" BD, but these both have hardcases)

Thanks for your time.

Chris.

That is a strange looking thing. I thought the fusion toms were short, but this is ridiculous.

I am in the market for one of these,if anyone has one for sale. Mapex no longer makes them.I would also consider other brands. Hope this is not a violation of forum rules.
Thanks

www.hardcase.com are great cases but difficult to get in the US these days. The cases telescope to accmmodate all kinds of sizes - I have a kit of square size toms and bass and they work great for that, but they will also fit shallow drums as well.

Actually yes ! Mapex has the economical efficiency philosophy in mind, all Mapex lugs are the same for all series, this way they only have one template and machinery tools which save money.

Almost true. The Pro M series, Saturn, Orion and Black Panther Snares, all share the same lug. However the M Birch, VX, and QR series share a different lug than the top line series. The entry level Q series has its own lugs.

Been a while since I've been on here, too busy playing and working (not the same time unfortunately ;-) )

Anyhow, got some new additions to the setup;

AAX 10" Splash
AAX 13" Fusion Hats
AAX 20" Studio Ride
Tama 8" & 10" Mini Tymps

The new hats have taken center stage whilst the old ones are now auxiliary. The new Ride is really versatile with a great wash, I play in several bands and use this as a Crash/Ride in the louder stuff, a more mellow, almost jazz ride in the more laid back stripped down setup.

Will be practicing again next week so will take more pic's, until then this is a mock up of what it does look like..... I'll replace this with the actual next week.

Interesting. . .the largest rack tom on the white kit looks like it's the same size as the old Premier "Tuna can" 14x8 toms infamously used (x3) by Keith Moon. Great-looking kit though; it's really too bad they're not available in the States!
