Default Using Samples

I'm trying to load some stuff onto my Roland SPD-S and I came across something which is called Sample. I absolutely have no clue what they are, but I'm guessing they're sound effects in .wav or .mp3 files.

The other problem is, there are A LOT of samples out there and I have no idea which brand I should go for. First off, I don't have $100000000 to try all those samples, and they're 12GB each. I'm looking for something like an 808 earthquake boom-y sound or something that's useful.

Anyone here mind guiding me on this one?

Thanks
