Default Gretsch Renown!

Hey guys, just got a new Slate Silver Sparkle Gretsch Renown kit in the 4-piece MOD configuration.

22x20
16x16
12x9
14x6.5

Pictures soon, as soon as I can heat up a can and cut a hole in the head, and set them up with my cymbals!

I'm so giddy and excited to be part of the Gretsch family!

For the record, I bought a second bass drum head to port so that I wouldn't have to cut a hole in my black Gretsch head, and I could never get it to sound like I wanted, so last night I put the un-ported black head back on and BOOM. So much better.
But you try your ear. and congratulations on the great Gretsch sound.

Sweet man. This is a kit that I was looking into buying specifically in that config. and finish. Great drums Gretsch is making nowadays. If you treat it well this is probably the only kit you would ever need. Have fun with it!

So gents, here are the long awaited pictures. But first, some specs.

22x20 Kick with Superkick 1 and Coated EQ3
12x9 Rack Tom with Clear G2 over stock reso
16x16 Floor with Clear G2 over stock reso
14x5.5 Mapex Black Panther in Birdseye Maple finish with brushed nickel hardware and Aquarian Reverse Power Dot over classic clear snare side (300 weight)

I also have the 14x 6.5 snare that came with it, but currently i'm not using it, and will probably sell it. I'm pretty sure I want to keep the Black Panther.

Also cymbal specs:

Zildjian:
13" Mastersound hats
17" Avedis Medium Thin Crash
20" K Custom Medium Ride
19" Avedis Medium Thin Crash

I'm looking to upgrade to bigger and darker cymbals. possibly another 19" crash, perhaps even move the avedis 19 over to my main, and have a 20" K Crash Ride as my secondary. 14" K mastersound hats probably, and for a new ride either the 22 K custom medium, the 22 K, or the 24 K light ride.

It's a good thing I'm not there in person or else I would be getting drool all over your shiny new tubs. Those are lookin' reeeaaaally good. Plus this is probably the only kit you will ever need for the rest of your life. Renowns are just such great kits. Enjoy yours.

i'm real giddy. i just played a 2 piece tonight. just kick, snare, hats, and ride. statement that made my night: my bud kyle says, "is that kick mic'ed?" happily i reply, "nope!"

also, i have new heads coming in. same snare head, just a new one. and then coated g2s and clear g1 resos for the toms. i'm real excited, since we're playing a show on friday!

i did see this finish at a sam ash, and these pictures, as good as they are, do not do this kit justice. Perhaps one of the best sparkles I have ever seen.

Congrats!!!

I love Gretsch drums. I owned 1 Gretsch kit, a Catalina Birch, for a while and I thought those sounded good. Those Renowns are awesome and I'm sure sound amazing.

That is a heck of a sweet set..........Awesome. I have the Catalina maples which in themselves sound great, so I'm sure a high end kit like that has to be mind blowing, I just added a second bass to mine, will post pics soon.

Awesome kit. I LOVE my Renowns, especially the snare. It took me a little time to dial it in, but I use it more than my 60's Krupa now. The finish on your kit is beautiful, man. Welcome to the club....

Hey how do you think the snare sounds? I saw one online and I don't know if I should buy or buy a Black Panther from the local music shop.

Mine sound fantastic, as for the snare, I wouldn't personally say it's up to par with a Black Panther, but that may be personal preference. If anyone decides to buy a kit, they come with my personal recommendation!

Default For Grunterstad

I run the stock emad batter on the bass with ALL rings removed and an AMBASSADOR Fiberskyn reasonant. I use a narrow felt strip top to bottom reasonant side about 1/3 the way in on the drum.

Sounds incred on my 22x20 renown bass drum. Nothing inside required.

Are these sparkle finishes a wrap? Im in the market for a maple drumset and the renowns and Pearls MCX are at the top of the list.

The Renown Sparkles are lacquer...the Pearl's are wrapped.

Great kit, OP...the Silver Slate finish is beautiful, and the Renowns are, in my opinion, the best bang-for-buck drums out there.

Yes, actually, my snare was not really mic'd, it was just in the mix so it could have some reverb in it. Apparently I play really loudly.

Once again, the kick caught my attention, which was why I asked. There's a good chance I'll be getting a Renown in 20x22, 8, 10, 12, and 14 in mid-January. This thread makes me even more excited about it! :D

Yeah, the 20" depth makes it a monster. Tons of punch though, it sounds thick.
