Default Want certain bass drum sound

I have a Tama Superstar 18x22 Bass. I still have the stock heads on it and I can't get the sound I want.

What I want is for my bass to have punch, but not sound like a cardboard box. I want some boom but I don't want it to sound like "boo--ooooom" and vibrate like that. I want it to have a clear deep pitch.

i was thinking of Powerstroke 3 heads on both sides, but which kind? Coated? Clear?

Other recommendations?

(Also, this is a little wierd, but I want it to sound like the bass drum on the Rock Kit on Garage Band program for Mac but a little more open since it will be on stage with other music.)

I bet you would like the EMAD, but I would also suggest Evans EQ3 and the Remo Powerstroke 3, all three clear.

coated PS3 batter + ebony PS3 front

or

Evans EQ 4 coated front and rear... (this is my setup and love it... puchy,
followed by a short boom with just the right attack... not cardbox at all...)

I've got an EMAD2 over EQ1 Coated on my 22x18 bass and it's got plenty of deep punch to it. However, I'm just not a fan of the plastic tone from clear heads though. EQ1s, both batter and reso models together would be a great combination though. I've got one on my 26" and a G1 Coated on the other side. Personally though, I prefer just G1 Coated heads all around on all drums and use felt strips for the bass. That gets that old fashioned "BOMP" out of the drum, the drum is allowed to be naturally deep as well. You will have a large dynamic range available as well. I'm not a believer in the holes for microphones in resonant heads. The best sounding bass drums I've ever heard recorded had a nice full tone which you cant get with a hole in your head. Also experiment with tightening the front head a good deal higher than the batter, don't do it too much on a 22" though as you can get quite high pitched, but enough tension will control sustain, increase response, and round out the tone.

WOW! I'm surprised by all the varied answers. I believe what you're all telling me is that ANYTHING is better than the stock heads.

Still a little confused. The last post went into tuning methods. What is your particular tuning method to get your bass to sound like that?
Keep coming with head combinations! That helps too!

Thanks alot!
