Default Gary Novak

No thread on a guy this gifted is outrageous:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCEuaN6-lr8

His chops have a bite to them which many lack, definitely one of the world's masters. I like the way his matched grip looks too.

Should anyone afford the occasional thought on the man, place it here.

Totally agree with you, JC. Talk of highly underrated. I heard him live once with Gary Willis and Scott Henderson. One of the most killer 3 piece gigs I've ever heard. EVER. He was murderous!

Killer, his style of grooving is just unbelievable. The bassist is jawdropping as well.

Gary makes an appearance on Billy Ward's "Voices in My Head DVD" under the assumed student name "Chaz". It's funny because he plays a bit and comments about how he has terrible technique. Mmm, sure :)

Yes, it's way out of question these guys have chops.
But...
What's the point of all this??
The music is horrible...

On the contrary I very much like Gary Novak playing with Tori Amos...

IYO.

Is there a manual somewhere prescribing non-horrible music that I might nor be aware of ?

Yes, in my opinion, this music is horrible, not even listenable.
To me the music is not all good only because it's music.
There's music and music...
IMHO.

Thanks for the IMHO and the " to me,"

...and of course you are right. There's music and there's music. No debating that.

I was taking "IMHO" and "to me" for granted.
You know, sometimes for replying too fast I omit them... :-)

And you will never hear him with Tori because...
it's Matt Chamberlain.

Sorry, my fault, I was convinced that it was Gary.

Heheh...
No, I was convinced it was Gary with Tori, on her album (to venus and back) on the second cd (live) there's a great groove intro on "precious things"...

Gary cut two fantastic albums with Joe Locke a few years ago: 4 Walls of Freedom and Dear Life. Both albums just burn.

If that bassist is who I think he is, then he's Jimmy Garrison's (yes, of the Classic John Coltrane Quartet) son - Matthew Garrison. Gary is tight as hell, sweet vid.

Gary Novak is one hell of a drummer!!! It's a shame he just has such a little thread!

I've recently been listening to Chick Corea's "time warp" and Allan Holdsworth's "The Sixteen Men of Tain" over and over. The guy is fantastic!!

Are there any transcriptions of his playing? Does anybody know? And videos of his playing (in good quality - except for the youtube stuff, which isn't that bad either...)?

YES! you are correct...
Hes an absolute beast.....

Saw him with Micheal Landau over the weekend and he just killed it...

Matter of fact my instructor who is a incredible player in his own right wanted to take a few lessons with him...kinda shows the respect he has from his peers in his profession....

Yeah, I unfortunately missed that concert when they were in Switzerland! Pity!!!

And his site has been under construction for ages! Is there a good discography around somewhere on the net?
And are dvds or videos on the market with him on drums? There's quite some stuff on youtube!

I've seen him play in front of 12 people at LaVe Lee in L.A. in April 2006 (with Scott Kinsey, Steve Tavaglione and Jimmy Earl). To be honest, I was not very impressed. I did not really like their music which might have played a role as I was not interested by the whole band (they guys are all amazing players in their own right though).

I am not very familiar with his work but I would strongly recommend to listen to his playing on Brandon Field's "Everybody's Business". Great album and great playing.

Gary is a really player as evidenced by his work with Chick Corea and Alanis most notably I guess. I played with a guitarist named Phil Brown and had to learn a couple of his albums including one called 'The Jimi Project' with Gary and bassist Jimmy Haslip (also unbelievable of course) and Gary's playing is top notch, tasty, and exciting all over that disk which is a great listen. I think another drummer, who DID play with Tori Amos, if I'm not mistaken and seeing and hearing him changed my life and the way I see drumming is Barry 'Frosty' Smith. He's done a lot with Tori Amos and a million other folks including Omar and the Howlers, Papa Mali, Chris Duarte, Soulhat, Marcia Ball, and the incomparable Lee Michaels on those jawdropping B3/drum duo albums they did in the 70 ('You Know What I Mean', etc.). . .he's incredible and I think is even on The Cowboy Junkies recent release . . .versatile, to China groove, and skills beyond anything I'll ever understand. . . .

Gary starts to really be one of my absolute favourite players.

Have you guys heard "Renegade Creation" with Michael Landau, Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip, Gary Novak?

Absolutely awesome drumming, I love it!! Such power, groove, finesse, dynamics, chops, creativity, speed (of course), did I say power?

Ok let me say something controversial here.

I think Gary is the finest player of uptempo meters in the jazz/fusion idiom there ever was! Ha.

No controversy IMO. His uptempo playing is so free, natural, flowing, and powerful. It's really amazing!!!
