Default new vintage Zildjian!

well, i was playing at a gig the other day, and this older man walks up to me, and says he has an old 24" cymbal he wants to sell me.

so, i got interested. that was Saturday.
He walks into my dad's office today with this grungy old cymbal in his hands. and says, here..give this to Alex when he gets home from school.
they say, well, how much do you want for it....

he says, nothing. im just glad someone is excited to have it. its been in my garage for over 30 years.

the stamp says:
Avedis
Zildjian CO
Genuine Turkish Cymbals
Made in USA

here's the info on the cymbal..haha..you'll enjoy this..
He purchased it in 1956 from Pappy Larson.( which was the founder of Larson Music in OKC)
this cymbal was his first big buy once he got out of the Marine Corp. he bought it for $87.

so yes...a 24" Vintage Zildjian for free. and it shined up pretty well i thought...

the only thing wrong, is he drilled 4 holes in it, and riveted them about 35 years ago...but, she still sounds good!

and sorry for the bad pics...i cant do any better unless i go outside..ha

enjoy!

Alex

If I could type the sound of my jaw hitting the floor, I would do that now...

Don't you love when fate smiles on we drummers? I'm totally jealous, this is the type of thing I wish happened to me more often. Looks like a beastly cymbal and getting it free of charge is just the icing on the cake.

Wow. Congrats, man. That's a once in a lifetime thing. I love the sound of vintage Z's. I have a 20" ride that was my dad's, and it's just fantastic.

Yeah, if you like the sound of it, you'd really regret selling it down the road. You've got a gem there!

...with that said, $115!!!

Weight sweepstake!

We guess the weight and the one who gets closest wins, right?

2,750 Grams is my guess.

My grandparents picked up a Yamaha Power V set at a garage sale a couple of years ago. It came with some beat up 70s New Beats, a 60s 17" Zildjian A crash, and a 22" Zildjian ride from the 50s. Grandparents told me I could set my own commission if I sold it (I think they thought I'd pick some monetary amount).

I quickly sold it to my drummer's stepson, but deciding on the commission was harder. In the end, rather than money, I took the 17" crash. The 22" ride was too washy to jive with the rest of my cymbals. It reminded me of this OLD cymbal a buddy of mine dug up several years ago... it was made by the Zildjian company but before they changed their name to Zildjian... or something like that.

Anyway, I have the 17", but seeing that 22" reminds me of what I could have kept... :-)

Very nice Avedis you got there Alex!
My teacher once gave me an old, quite heavy 20" Avedis. I really like the stick and crash sound, it got great character indeed.

I`m surprised that your 24" sounds so light. Maybe it`s about 2900g? Sounds great for sure and I think that the holes don`t affect the sound in any negative way.

Have fun with this vintage! =)

Karl
