Default Sonor Designer Five Star Makassar Ebony Drum Kit

I love the five star kits. Check the link below for vitals.
http://www.drumsforless.com/SONOR.htm
So I bought the last one from Shane at the five star shop in Portland Maine. I ordered the extra 8X8 tom. It comes with a letter of validation that it was used in drums clinics by both Thomas Lang and Steve Smith.
:D :D :D

You've been on quite the shopping spree lately...
That kit kicks ass. I'll bet it sounds fantastic.
The Drum Shop carries some serious high-end gear.

Yeah man! The drum shop here in KC has a couple of those sets and man, are they sweet! There are some sets out there that I think are as nice, but none nicer. Treat 'em good!

Jeez Louise! The way you've been buying high-end gear, did you just rob a bank or something?

One of the nicest finishes I've seen on a kit, I might try and buy just the snare from ebay or something. Do you have any videos of you playing them?

Lucky.
High-end Sonor kits are "la creme de la creme" in my opinion. Sound character is simply beautiful, so is quality...and it`s surely made with looove. =)

Is it made from 100% maple? It says that the "inner plies" are maple...or is it a mixture of maple and another wood?

They are Designer Maple Light shells which are rock maple, 6.3 mm thickness. 3 layers of 3 ply rock maple. With Ebony Innear and Outer Veener.

Nice edition to my Signature beech 12 mm heavy shell kit.

My buying days are done. All there is left to do is play! Drums are my main exercise program other then walking due to my spinal cord injury. I therefore took some of my settlement money and bought some exercise gear. Time to work out.

Sorry to hear of your injury, but good for you on using some of the settlement money on some very nice drums. That Zelkova should go beautifully with the Sonors. Congrats!

I was able to secure a side snare for the five star kit, 12X5.That brings the kit to a grand total of 8 pieces. 8X8, 10X8, 12X9 Toms
14x14, 16x16 Floor Toms
14X6, 12x5 Snares
22x18.5 Bass Drum

This is the new snare.

Derek Roddy said the five star ebony kit he played was the best sounding drum kit he ever played. He did not know if it was the kit as he only played one or if that would be true of the entire 25 kits. I have my fingers crossed for the next three weeks till they are at home. The 8X8 tom will not arrive for 4 to 6 months.

Hey, Sonor Deisgners with light maple shells.... I don't think it's possible they can sound bad. Even if they do, they're probably worth the price tag just so you can have them in the living room to look at. One of the most beautiful pieces of furniture I've ever seen....

This is one case where gold hardware really does work.

Well done, congrats

that is a hot kit. the finish is incredible and the gold hardware compliments it very well. a question though, what are those black things on the tension rods? also, the tension rods also look a little different to other ones; would you have to buy a different/special drum key to tune it?

They're slotted instead of traditional square shaped. Just means you use a different tuning key.

I think the tuning rods require the "McGyver" Swiss army knife, blade # 3..
When your back is really hurting send those babies down to Florida. I can keep them warm for you.

Much to the dismay of die-hard Sonor fans, the slotted tension screws are now a thing of the past, unless you want to special order them.

Big_c, those black things are the "Tune Safe" devices used by Sonor. They keep the tension rods form moving, even at very loose tunings. They have now produced a Tune Safe device that is hidden inside of the rod/lug mechanism.

Hey Junglelord we've got to stop meeting on these other forums, the people at the Sonor Museum might get mad at us. I'm 1420 from the Sonor site. I saw you on the Pearl forum just a few days ago. Thanks for posting my drumsolo (of my SQ 2 ) there.
Congrats again on your 5 star Sonor purchase, many have said the 5 star is one of the better Sonor gets out there, second to my SQ 2 that is, HA HA! just joking, enjoy those new Sonors!

Not sure how I missed this post, I do all my shopping (And Dreaming) at the drum shop in Portland as well, Shane, Chris and the rest of the guys are great. I'll be headed there soon to grab my new snare.

That kit looks amazing btw, I remember checking it out when I was down there before you bought it. Congrats, though you've had it awhile now..lol

R30 Neil Peart DW Edge snare 14X6.5
Dunnett Titanium snare 14X6.5
Sonor Five Star Limited Edition Drum kit
6.4 mm Maple light shell with ebony veneer in and out.
Gold hardware
8×10 (9-ply tom-tom)
9×12 (9-ply tom-tom)
14×14 (9-ply floor tom)
16×16 (9-ply floor tom)
18×22 (12-ply bass drum)
5×14 (12 ply snare)

Remo Dejimbe 14"

I added the remo Dejimbe and have the Dunnett Titanium snare with the throw off, so I can do some nice tribal rhythms on the left side with the 8 inch tom on the right.

I had not really thought about it but I got a ****load of money in snares on this kit alone.

Worth every shinny penny.

Actually the kit was half price and played by Thomas Lang and Steve Smith.
If you look at the retail price, I got it for half, also the Canadian dollar was worth 1.08 american when I bought it so I saved another 8%.
It was a blessing because I am on a pension with a spinal cord injury.

It sounds so deep and just sings. They may be thin shells but the sound is wide and full, speaks volumes about Sonor craftmanship.
