Default Just switched from G2 Clears to G2 Coateds. WOW!!!

Hello everyone,

As most of you know, I had recently bought a new (used) DW kit. I replaced all the batters and put on G2 clears. They sounded great. But, it was just a bit "plasticy". That is to be expected.

So today, I purchased G2 coateds for all the toms. WHAT A DIFFERENCE.

I forgot just how much I love the sound of a coated head. They sound so good.

I just need to buy some G1 clears for the resos.

Anyway, the dubs sound great with the G2 coateds. Couldn't be happier.

I just wonder what kind of difference going to G1 clears on the reso will make considering the clear DW resos on the bottom must be 4 or 5 years old at least.

Mike

I have G2 coated heads on my DW toms. I love the sound! I've tried clear G1s, G2s, and some other heads, but always come back to the G2s. G1 clears sound great as resonant heads, but I'm wondering if I should go for G1 coateds. The G1 clears still sound a little "boingy", but definitely not as much as the DW resonants were. Before I change the resonants next time, I'm going to experiment with coated vs. clear.

hm...

i was going to get clear emps or g2s for my set once i got the money.
I have never really used clear heads apart from the stock heads on my first set, which i soon changed out.

so I dont really remember how they sounded.
maybe its my brain blocking out all those bad tuning years :/

but now your post gets me thinking.

I think it's a good idea Mike. Replacing those old resos will really wake them bad babies up.

Yep. Coated G2s over clear G1s is a great combination. The new G plus heads on the batter side may be a great way to go as well. I'm looking forward to trying them.

Well,

Today I added G1 clears to the resos and WHAT a difference. G2 coateds and g1 clears just sound good together.

There is no telling just how old the DW resos had been on there. Could be more than 5 or 6 years.

Anyway, they really sing now.

I am tuning them a bit higher now, but they sound GREAT together. For all of you drum dial guys or gals, I have my kit set at:

Bass Drum 70 over 70 - Might change this. Sound is a bit high, but still sounds good.
Yamaha Snare - 90 over 80. Just sounds phenomenal!!!
8 x 7 tom is 76 over 75 - This is the tom I have seen the most difference in. Not choked a all.
10 x 8 tom is 76 x 75 - tom sounds good.
12 x 10 tom is 76 x 74 - again, just sounds right
14 x 12 tom is 74 x 73 - sounds good. Nice drop in pitch from the rack to the floor tom (although it is suspended)
16 x 14 tom is 73 x 72 - Earthquake alert. Sounds like a beast feeding on the weak.

Anyway, the kit is sounding better than ever. And this kit sounds better than all my previous kits except for the Ludwig Classic Maple. The both sounded damn good.

Take care everyone!

Mike

Cool, Yep, that's a great head combo. I use numbers pretty close to yours. My 8 inch is 70/70. Seems to blend in a little better, but all shell packs are different. To get more boom and lower the pitch of your kick, back off the tension on the reso head. Works pretty good.

Funny, but I'll be working on my Ludwigs today. I got a set of Vintage As. We'll see how that works out.

I'm glad you have your kit dialed in. DWs rock!

Yes! Great heads! They sound fantastic, they feel good, and they tune stupid-easy.
