I have had the same kind of fracture in an SD10 stick, I broke that on my e-kit. Not sure whether that was oak or maple though. But mine were older and I was hitting very hard.
Are you a heavy hitter?

Its not at all uncommon for maple sticks to break like that. I'd be suprised if the store gave you your money back. Keep playing maple stcks and youll see more breakage in this manner. Low moisture content.

I use maple sticks and in 6 months of using them, not a broken stick yet at all.

well its probably just bad wood. If you've been using this kind, then it is probably the structure of that special stick.

This is becomming more and more common with Vic's. I use Vic's and I probably always will. I used to go through about 10 pair a year, now I'm going through about 20. I wonder if something was changed in the factory.

I love the feel of those sticks but i go thru them like crazy, I broke a stick once 5 minutes into using it. I usually buy them 4 pairs at a time and they only last a month. I switched over to promark oak 2bs and haven't had a problem yet.

When I was in highschool I choose to play Bass drum instead of snare line, (don't really care for the snare line) anyhoo, my maple mallets would sometimes break like that. I think it does have something to do with the wood and the moisture content.

i had a stick break a few months ago on the day i bought it. it broke perfectly in half perpendicular to the length of the stick. it was really weird. i went back to the shop and they gave me a new pair seeing that i was in their earlier that day and neither of the sticks had many marks on them.

Hmm, not as weird as you might think, it split right through the grain of the wood.

Unfortunately wood is like that. It's amazing that for the most part stick companies have managed to avoid this. Wood is somewhat unpredictable as you can't see ALL the way inside and a defect might be JUST below the surface, but they have learned to do the best they can and fortunately you rarely get that kind of thing happening.

Too bad though, sticks are EXPENSIVE!!
