Default New Heads For Mahoganny Shelled Drums?

Hi,

Im thinking of getting a new Premeir Cabria (7 ply mahogany) for a gig kit. I was just wondering what batter heads you would recomend for the toms, I was thinking alog the lines of clear emporers or clear g2's? I like quite warm fat punchy sounding drums but with good projection. As it is mahogany I dont want to get heads that will completley deaden and kill the drums.

Help much appreciated, Matt

2 plys will project unmiked in a decent sized room. But if you're playing outside, I'd say coated one plys over clear one plys (coated G1's over Clear G1's).

I have g2 coated over g1 coated on my Gretsch Catalina but I'm not a fan of the g2s. G1 Coateds work much better on BOTH sides. Nice warm sound, mahogany isn't that resonant anyway (at least the kind we're talking about). EQ1 or EQ4 work great as bass heads too. They don't kill the sound but dampen it nicely depending on the tuning.

The G2/G1 combo is a good combo, the other option if you want a bit "brighter" tone would be clear emperors over clear ambassadors. Remo heads have a tendency to have a little brighter tone to them than Evans does. If you need more projection try a G1 or Ambassador for your batter.
